Fasterlouder.com.au review Oct 13 2009
Julia & the Deep Sea Sirens started off the night with one of their soft, folk/country originals Count the Ways, before getting into some amazing finger plucking on the guitar and cello. The sound they are able to produce is truly mesmerising, each instrument complimenting the others perfectly. Every song seemed to captivate the audience, the sheer variety of instruments which the quartet plays ensuring a unique and memorable sound in each, while still remaining distinctly Julia. Between them they combine cello, double bass, acoustic and electric guitar, Casiotone keyboard and drums (with mallets, bashers, brushes and more.)
Lead singer Julia Johnson has a certain charm that makes her very likeable, her antics and stories between songs making everybody laugh. Introducing her song Eyes So Blue, she pointed out that it isn’t “I’s So Blue”, giving her best homie impersonation, and the fact that she wrote the song about a good friend of some years, but then realised afterwards that his eyes were actually brown. Fail, she says. Julia & the Deep Sea Sirens closed out their set with, what Julia describes as, their “electro pop freak out song” (purely because it involves the ten dollar Casiotone keyboard from Vinnies.)
