MY CHILDHOOD HERO (SHO NUFF) IN ACTION!!!!!! ABOUT J-ZONE:
1992.
J-ZONE BIO
Before I made records that critics loved to hate or ignore, I walked around with a hi-top fade and a walkman that I never took off, even in school. After a short summer internship at Power Play Studios in Queens (where I watched Large Professor work on albums for Akinyele and Roxanne Shante) and listening to the sounds of producers like 45 King, Bomb Squad, DJ Pooh, DJ Muggs, Mr. Mixx and Pete Rock, I was convinced I wanted to make beats...and a career in the unstable world of rap!
My childhood dream of playing bass in a funk band died after the jheri curl went outta style. I got an SP-1200 and started making home demos. 2 years later, in 1994, I met Vance Wright (Slick Rick’s DJ) who had a studio up in New Rochelle, NY. I started interning/ engineering there at age 17. I learned the basics of engineering and brushed up on my beat making techniques...all while running gofer errands to get Greg Nices turkey sandwiches while he worked on Nice-N-Smooths Jewel of the Nile LP. Grand Puba was there working on his 2000 LP as well. I produced my first joint for Preacher Earl (down with Nice-N-Smooth) called "Fool I Got Your Back" that came out in 1995 and got paid $100. Ballin’!
My college senior project was called Music For Tu Madre, an album that eventually became my debut release on my upstart Old Maid Entertainment label in 1999. I followed up with A Bottle Of Whup Ass-The EP (2000), Pimps Dont Pay Taxes (2001), $ick Of Bein Rich (2003) and A Job Ain’t Nuthin' But Work (2004). I also released the Gimme Dat Beat Fool! Remix Project, Experienced!!! ( a Hendrix tribute), Remixes Vol. 1: *Hi-Top Fade Not Included and a few other limited edition concept based side projects over years. 2006 saw the release of The Bo$$ Hog Barbarian$...Every Hog Has Its Day (an album with longtime collaborator Celph Titled) and To Love A Hooker: The Motion Picture Soundtrack (an instrumental soundtrack to a movie I conceived that doesn't really exist). I no longer MC or record albums because I‘m too old, but that doesn't mean my alter-ego, Chief Chinchilla, doesn't. I produced his debut album, Live @ The Liqua Sto, in 2008. A hilarious collection of minute long malt liquor commercials, Live @ The Liqua Sto is my most recent project and was inspired by the cult classic St. Ides Malt Liquor commercials of the early 1990's.
I'm best known as a producer, and all of my albums were self-produced. I’ve worked with Biz Markie, E-40, Sadat X, Lil Fame (M.O.P), Lonely Island, Akinyele, Tha Alkaholiks, Devin The Dude, King T, Casual, ESHAM, Louis Logic, Prince Po, Vast Aire, RA the Rugged Man, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, MF Grimm, The Juggaknots, Mr. Lif and many more. I've also collaborated with Da Beatminerz, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Danger Mouse & Cee-Lo (Gnarls Barkley) and Large Professor as an MC, DJ and studio engineer. As a DJ, I’ll always be known for my humorous and theme based Gator$-n-Fur$ mix shows with Chief Chinchilla (download all 16 of them for FREE in my blog section or at ughh.com) and my politically incorrect Ign’ant Mix CD series. But, I also play disco, funk, hip hop classics, new jack swing and breaks when the crowd behaves and I'm in a good mood.
I completely retired from rapping, but when I did it I didn't freestyle and I was known for vulgarity, brutally honest social commentary and crude subject matter, but always all in fun. I've done shows, tours and DJ gigs from all across the US, to Australia and throughout Europe (including a DJ set at the prestigious ATP Festival)...and picked up a lotta passport stamps. I've also partnered up with longtime friend/peer DJ Sheep of Australia to form our DJ crew, Extra Chee$e. Senior citizens and those with a sense of humor found me pretty amusing, but the rest of the world hated me. Thanks for your support! I also had my own column dedicated solely to that niche of obscure foul filthy rap (Ign'ant) which had 2 and 1 year runs in Hip Hop Connection (UK) and Elemental magazines, respectively. Speaking of hip hop journalism, my take on the music biz in blog form (in 2007) was recently published in a textbook called Common Culture: 6th Edition (Prentice Hall Pub.) and I blog for indusrty veteran Dante Ross (www.danteross.com/blogs/jzone). Besides the selective DJing, I'll hook up a beat now and then and do most of my work behind the scenes for things you probably wouldn't know about, nor care to. I even teach music at a college part time! Rap is a young man's game and I'm changing as a person, so it's time to stay behind the scenes or move on. I love music but I always hated the music business, so f*ck it!
I currently live with my beloved Grandmother Evil E (she's on 3 of my album covers) in Jamaica Queens, NY. I can usually be found going to the store for her with a pocket full of coupons or at the house watchin Sports Center all day and waitin for somebody with some money to call me. Also hip-hop's biggest basketball fan, I've written articles for Bobbito Garcia's Bounce magazine, Reverse Magazine (France) and I'm a regular contributor for SLAM Magazine/SLAMonline.com and others. I'm a known New York high school basketball fanatic and journalist - I've canceled in-stores to catch playoff games- and my NBA Trash Talk Blogs have a pretty decent following because I thrash these overpaid bums. I'll serve you in a game of HORSE when my jumper is on too. And speakin of sports, I recently had some music in a Sprint Commercial for Superbowl XL. I've done work as an actor in some indie film projects, including RA The Rugged Man and Frank Henenlotter's Bad Biology which was filmed in 2006. I even scored music for a porno (Asian Bang, 2006)! Loved by few, hated by many...f*ck it. I cant please everybody. Producer, ex-rapper, DJ, teacher, label owner, sports & music journalist, actor and wearer of fine fur coats. Talk sh*t about me all you want, just make sure you spell my name right because when they list me as "Jay Zone" that pisses me off.
Tighten them around the wrist joint before doing any strenuous exercise involving arms, even push up's. I think when you get into the heavier weights the weakest link on the body are the joints. I tighten them to point of cutting off the circulation, but immediately release them after completing the set. But in my case it'ss tendonitous, which is more of an arthritic condition, which usually follows a sprain. If you have a sprain then it has to heal for 2-3 weeks before using it again (ibuprofen reduces the swelling much quicker). The other problem I ran into was straining my rotator cuff on dumbbell fly's. Trying to increase weight every week to bulk takes it's toll. I've had success with 2000 mg per day of fish oil and flax seeds (they contain ALA) which is a tissue repair compound.
A safer substitute for bench might be to wrap some plates in a towel, put them in a backpack, put on the backpack and do you push up-s like that. I've been thinking about getting a weighted lead vest for push ups, pulls and dips. Although I think the safest route is still the cybex, and smith machines because you have to keep perfect form. I see most of the retired (40+) bodybuilders doing bench on the Smith. No flys or regular bench.
I know you don't drink anymore but I came up with the formula for Project Paradise:
half shot of Hennessy half shot of 151 Bacardi Rum half shot of Jack Daniel's and a half shot of Russian Standard Vodka.
Add your desired amount of grape juice (aka purple) and for a little extra kick top it off with some Red Bull. If you're in an 80's thug mode, pour all ingredients into an empty 40oz bottle and substitute beer nuts with sunflower seeds. Serve Chilled (like EPMD) and garnish with a 9mm. Note: all ingredients can be boosted from your local Korean market.
Yo What up, Man I Love yo Music to death! You keep it real, and don't talk that Gangsta-, Ho-, Crack Shit :D Kepp It Comin' and never stop because You inspire bunches of people. Including me. I'm 15 Years old, and from Germany and I think you're in the same league as Pete Rock, Premo, Dilla and so on.
