Books: My book collection is my pride and joy. See below.

Outdoors: Hiking, flat-water kayaking ('05 Dagger Blackwater 10.5), bicycling ('06 Specialized Tri-Cross Sport). I love to watch extreme sports, but keep my own pursuits fairly subdued.

Photography (Sony DSC-P7). Just a hobby, but I think some of my stuff is fairly good. See Slideshow >> or the Pics page for a sampling.

    Buddhism & Yoga.

Driving. If you want to know what a Honda Civic is capable of, come for a ride with me. That unassuming little car can move. ;)

U.S. Civil War history. The portions of battlefields preserved in the mid-Atlantic region of the US are beautiful spots. Exploring them via car, bicycle and foot exposed me to the history of the war. I'm drawn to the time period, to the experiences of the civilians who lived near these battlefields, and to the big question: Why? Not just the political "why", but the personal "why" of the individual soldiers who fought. It's an endlessly fascinating topic.
  • Music

For serious listening, there's very little out there these days that really moves me. I respond very strongly to certain voices, and to lyrics that give me something to think about. These days I'm a fairly monogamous fan of Incubus

For casual listening: T00l, Soundgarden, Gutter Twins, Pearl Jam, Guns'n'Roses, Jimi Hendrix, Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana, Metallica, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Faith No More, Janis Joplin, Beethoven, Johnny Cash, Anouar Brahem, David Bowie, INXS, The White Stripes, Gnarls Barkley, Zydeco/Cajun... All sorts of stuff.
  • Movies

Films I'll watch over and over: Dangerous Liaisons; Elizabeth; The Libertine; Period films in general; Donnie Darko; The Cell; To Kill a Mockingbird (best novel adaptation I've ever seen); Thelma & Louise; Dances With Wolves; A River Runs Through It; anything weird with Brad Pitt (12 Monkeys, Se7en, that kind of stuff); pretty much anything with Johnny Depp; pretty much anything by M. Night Shyamalan; the first Matrix (Reloaded and Revolutions fell short of their potential, I believe); the Harry Potter series (2nd best book adaptations I've seen); Star Wars (preferably Episodes I - III); lots of others that I just can't think of at the moment.

Munro; Mark Twain; Shakespeare; Hermann Hesse; Goethe; Fyodor Dostoevsky; Voltaire; Edgar Allen Poe; Nathaniel Hawthorne; Joseph Conrad; William Golding; Shirley Jackson; Bernd Heinrich; Carl Sagan; Clive Barker; Joseph Campbell; Keri Hulme; Lewis Carroll; William Least Heat-Moon; Edward O. About me:

I've found that MySpace is a great place to just talk, something I don't do much of "In Real Life". Oh, I can babble a blue streak about the weather, what I did over the weekend, and what's going on in current events, but I find little opportunity to really talk about more interesting, meaningful topics. I mean, how often do Jungian archetypes, song lyric interpretation, or just what makes us tick as human beings come up at the office water cooler? The blogging function here at MySpace was my original outlet, but their damned technical errors became too annoying so I moved my blog to http://kalidurga.blogspot.com/. So, if you feel we have interests in common or if something I write strikes you and you just want to blab, feel free to message me or post a comment here or at my blog.
(I've probably just made myself a target of every troll on MySpace,
but so be it.)

A request:
If you're considering adding me as a "friend", please send me a note to establish communication. I'm not here to collect a bunch of faces in my "Friends" section. As I said above, I'm here to talk, and it's rare that I approve "friend" requests without an accompanying message.

Who I'd like to meet:

I wish there were a section titled "Places I'd like to visit". I've always had a stronger connection to place than to people. I remember a conversation I had with someone a few years ago in which he talked about how various songs reminded him of people he knew. I couldn't come up with a single person that any song reminded me of. I could, though, think of a handful of songs that remind me of places that I love.

I've met a few of the people I've admired over the years. In every case, I've either found that I had less to talk to them about than I thought, or I've found them to be less than I expected. Basically, either I say something stupid, or they do. But, in the fantasy-land of my imagination where things go just the way I'd like them to, I'd get a kick out of meeting:

John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester; Siddhartha Gautama (pre- & post-Buddhahood); Carl Jung; Johnny Depp; Chris Cornell (pre-sobriety); Kim Thayil; the Marquis de Sade; the Dalai Lama; Maynard James Keenan; Queen Elizabeth I; Brandon Boyd; Joseph Campbell; Floyd Landis (pre-2006 TdF scandal); Dave Zabriskie; Anthony Bourdain.

In response to yer photo comment...
    Haw haw haw.
Yea, I break out a grin now and then. But, yes, it was a good beach day. The kind where it's hard to leave until the sun goes down.

How funny that you found that. We're famous for our fried chicken, and that, out of all 4 chicken houses, is my favorite! :)

Uhm...internet? I think it's an edit of a real picture (like my program allows me a "color book" mode).

Normally I do take my own pictures...but haven't made it out anywhere lately! School! :)

My picture though - is mine. It's a cemetary in Charleston.
