Indeed, the original compositions were the touchstones of this performance. Songs such as "Past Time" (a punchy arrangement that worked well to kick off the evening), "Main Inspiration" (a thoughtful tune that was melodic and haunting), "Mad Dog" (a song that worked mostly as a vehicle for musician solos), and the aforementioned "Chiaroscuro" (a tune that started out with an almost avant-garde emphasis of Florybarnes's bass tones, and ended with all musicians nearly crashing together for a nice finish) were well-written and performed with precision and deft. And Kandi's arrangements of standards worked to display some of the young musician's influences and interests: Jimmy Van Heusen's "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" (an arrangement wherein lengthy saxophone noodling kicked things off), Kurt Weill's "What Good Would The Moon Be?" and Dexter Gordon's "The Panther" provided audience members a glimpse at Kandi's musical inspirations.
I'm looking forward to following Kandi's jazz career. If his Kerry Hall performance was any indication, this young saxophonist will be having a major impact on the Pacific Northwest jazz scene.

Jazz is the only purely American music and the one genre that has embraced elements of all musical forms. This is why it is always exciting to find young artists who push the boundaries to create their own unique style, and Kareem Kandi is one musician who does just that. -- The Weekly Volcano --
Hello and welcome to my band's Myspace. Here you can find information on the group, listen to some recordings, and find out where we'll be performing next. As a band we perform many different styles of music ranging from, but not limited to: jazz, blues, standards, ballads, funk, rock and original music. We perform all over the northwest in a variety of settings. ( clubs, festivals, corporate parties, private parties, clinics/workshops, etc. ) The songs posted here are taken from our new cd, and from recordings of live performances. Both examples should give you a good idea of what we sound like.
To all of the fans who continually come out to see us and support us at live shows, we would like to say a huge THANK YOU!!!
You guys make it all worthwhile. If you are checking out the band for the first time, we'd like to say welcome, and we hope you enjoy what you hear. Hopefully we'll see you at a gig in the near future.

I know it's like a breath of fresh air to know someone you played with in the past is doing well for themselves. My mom still says you're the best saxaphonist I've played with and I agree. Let's definately hook up and play sometime. Your band sounds great keep the music flowin'!
Hey!!! Thank you for the update and invite out to your shows!!! I see you've been playing quite a bit with the P-BOYS! You guys are all amazing musicians!!! Hugs!
Hey Kareem! So, I guess I'm not enough of a groupie, what's going on October 18th? Tom the slacker doesn't seem to want to update the Paperboys calendar, so I'll be depending on you from now on, I suppose.
I always seem to get online just AFTER you've played a gig in Seattle... One of these days I'm gonna catch the Kareem Kandi Band! In the mean time, I hope life is being good to you! :)
Thanks for the add, and thanks for the GREAT show here in the valley! You guys really brought it and we were honored to have you. Hope we can afford you next year... Keep it coming! ~ L
