  • Bio

"Other songwriters sometimes say 'how can you write such personal songs? They're astounded by my honesty. I mean, I really really wish I could write a song for its own sake…you know, think of an interesting subject and write a song about it. But I can't do that. I just can't. I write because I have to…I need to get something off my chest. It's painful, but necessary…" Calling Kate Walsh a singer songwriter is like saying Van Gogh was a cartoonist. Kate is, er, different. A 28-year-old from a sailing town in Essex who's been likened to Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush and Jane Austen, she's ferociously independent…in every sense. She adores Debussy, studies cello, listens constantly to Classic FM (and little else), bemoans the demise of vinyl and CDs (she finally got an iPod when iTunes gave her one after 'Tim's House' knocked Take That off the top of the download chart but rarely uses it), is entertainingly scathing about the conventional music industry ("it's fickle, selfish, impersonal and backstabbing") – and has established her own cottage industry to do it her way. And when she sits down to write a song you'd better lock up your hearts for you instantly become Kate's close personal confidante as she bares her soul with shocking candour. Key Track: 'Your Song' After some extensive touring, Kate followed up 'Tim's House' with 'Light & Dark'; an album that was exactly that and included songs such as the title track which had the ability to make grown men (and national radio presenters) cry when played up close and personal. Key Track: 'Light & Dark'. In 2010, Kate released 'Peppermint Radio' – an arresting and stripped down collection of unexpected covers, including songs by Radiohead, EMF, Prefab Sprout, Blur, The Shamen, The Cure, Erasure and Duran Duran. "I used to say I'd never do a cover's album," Kate recalls, "I thought I would always have masses of material up my sleeve; endless heartache to pour my creativity into and I would be able to wallow in my songwriting for many years to come. But things didn't quite work out that way once it was time to start on recording in early 2010". Still, her take on such classic tracks has now left her mark on the songs that helped form how she writes and constructs her own music today. Key Track: 'Unbelievable'. For the next chapter of her musical journey, Kate's decided to take a different route to the tried and tested methods of the 'old school', and as with 'Tim's House', will unfurl her new album using the wonders of the new technology at her disposal. From the 21st March, 2011, Kate will release one new song each month from her forthcoming album. The traditional approach won't be completely ignored as the album will have a physical release in November (to coincide with her UK tour), but by including her fans in the process of actually making the album and allowing them to have access to material as early as nine months in advance, Kate believes this form of 'inclusion' will allow her fans to feel truly part of the process. The first song to be made available will be the title track 'The Real Thing' – a classic and beautiful piece that will remind fans of the simplicity of her breakthrough album 'Tim's House'. Indeed, it's Kate's wish to record an album in the simplest and truest form possible and so all songs for the new album will be recorded live, yes, live in the old fashioned sense of the word – no overdubs, no backing vocals…just simple and honest one-take performances which are straight from her heart. 'I want capture the moment the song is played on stage and transfer it to an album. This is the real me, the real thing…'
