Kill the Captains came into existence in 2006 when four friends with overlapping music tastes decided to make a noise together, their previous bands having run their course. They started out as a rough-hewn psychedelic jam band, in love with the drone and playing for the sake of playing. Slowly but surely, the jams condensed into songs. These were refined and shortened into energetic pop bullets, most of which clock in at 3 minutes or less. These lean, mean tunes are unique, but are steeped in the band’s shared love of 1990s American alternative music, shoegaze and Krautrock.
Kill the Captains believe that adventurous, noisy rock music can be fun and temper their most out-there moments with shout-along choruses and the fizzing interplay between their dual-guitar attack. They are anchored by a propulsive yet metronomic rhythm section who allow the songs to spiral off into lunacy but always bring them back from the brink.
The band's eponymous debut EP was released in May 2008 and features BOTTOM LIP, CHRUNT, LONG IN THE TOOTH and FUN ANXIETY.
"Double jointed and clever pop" - Organ Magazine (Single of the Week)
"Like hitching a ride with The Strokes after they've necked a truckload of psychotropic drugs...an excellent debut EP, and a fine addition to Sheffield's already impressive roll-call of talent." - Music OMH
"Very British, imaginative yet a bit left of centre but a whole lot good. Kill the Captains are truly worthy of your attention." - The Bluesbunny (4 stars)
"House band at the asylum" - Jukebox (4 stars)
"An edgy, syncopated release that bangs on quite well with a few new ideas." - Manchester Music (3.5 stars)
"Feedback, jingly-jangly guitar, slightly distracted vocals - what more could you want in a 3-minute popsong? This lot are full of promise." - Is this music? (3.5 stars)
