NIGHT FALLS DARKLY
Night Falls Darkly

Signet Eclipse ♦ October 2008
ISBN 978-0-451-22537-5

Death is inevitable. But there are some souls, more wicked and disobedient than most, who defy Death’s claim. Rebellious souls who must be called to heel.

ARCHER, Lord Black, returns to England at the behest of Queen Victoria to immerse himself in the dark, hellish streets of London’s East End. Among the immortal Shadow Guard, he is the most prolific and cunning of the Reclaimers. He revels in the hunt of his current prey: an ill-mannered, reluctant soul reviled in the daily newspapers as Jack the Ripper. Archer has only one weakness … one distraction … the young woman he spared from death two years before.

ELENA WHITNEY has never wanted for anything – not since coming under the protection of her mysterious and absent guardian, Lord Black, who has gifted her with everything a young woman of quality could ever hope for, including an enviable address, an unlimited income and entrée into the drawing rooms of high society. But now, after nearly two years of indifference, he believes he can sweep into her life and rid himself of her by marrying her off. If he knew anything about her – anything at all – he’d know she had greater aspirations than that.

SHADOW GUARDS
Who are the Shadow Guards?

The Shadow Guards are a mysterious order of immortals tasked with intervening, as necessary, in the lives and deaths of mortals. Archer, Lord Black, the hero of NIGHT FALLS DARKLY, is a Reclaimer, and is charged with hunting down and eliminating the most morally deteriorated, wicked souls of the earth's population. Reclaimers are known for their ruthlessness, and even other immortals fear them. Only an immortal can slay an immortal, and it is the Reclaimers who, at times, are dispatched by the Primordial Council to act as assassins. Over the centuries they have aligned themselves, when necessary, with mortal kings and leaders. Some have been awarded titles and estates, and they enjoy the privacy and comfort wealth can bring. Archer is a particular favorite of Queen Victoria.

* * * * *
NIGHT FALLS DARKLY is the first book in the Shadow Guards series that will release in October 2008 from Signet Eclipse. How many installments will follow in this series?

I'm presently writing SO STILL THE NIGHT, the second in the Shadow Guard series, which follows the story of the deeply competitive Helios, Lord Alexander, who we meet in NIGHT FALLS DARKLY. As for how many installments will follow — that depends on the popularity of the books with readers. I hope there will be more.

* * * * *
Can each book be read as a stand-alone novel? Or can the reader rather expect an ongoing storyline that will conclude in the last installment?

Each book can be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel, out of order, but there is a story thread that will carry throughout — an increasingly malevolent danger that threatens the existence of not only the immortals, but all of mankind.

* * * * *
The story is set in the Victorian era. What fascinated you so much that you set your stories in that time?

My fascination with the Victorian era began while reading the novels and stories of late-Victorian Henry James and Edith Wharton. Such beautiful people, and careful society manners … and deep, shocking betrayals. And I've always loved anything spooky and gothic. If there's fog and shadows, I'm there. As a setting, I found Victorian London to be especially interesting. There was such an intense concentration of wealth, privilege and opulence in neighbourhoods like Mayfair and Belgravia, while just a short distance away were the neighbourhoods of the East End, where one would find the lowest and most desperate of human conditions. There's also so much “quirk” associated with the Victorian era, and I'm a big fan of quirky.

* * * * *
What inspired you to write romance in general, and this series in specific?

To me, there's nothing more exciting than the first meeting, and the subsequent “dance” that takes place between two people who are meant to be together. Who are meant to be soul mates. Especially when it's obvious they can never be together. I love writing romance because I get to make the “can never be together” disappear. It was even more fun putting the “immortal” twist on this series. You'll see my tag phrase: Heroes worth waiting (forever) for. When you've existed from the beginning of time, and lived a thousand “lives” already — what sort of person would make time stand still for you? I got to explore that question in these books.

* * * * *
What should readers know about your books before they buy them?

That they are a strong balance of both the historical and the paranormal subgenres. I really hope I've created something very different, that many readers will enjoy.

* * * * *
Do your books have a HEA (Happily-Ever-After)?

Yes, they do!

* * * * *
What are your heroes and heroines like?

My heroes are sexy, competent warriors who are jaded by all they've seen over the centuries. They are men who gave up on love a long time ago. My heroines are gifted, intelligent women who blaze a meaningful path for themselves, in spite of the restrictions of the time period.

* * * * *
What do you hope readers take with them after reading one of your books?

I hope I've written the kind of characters and love story that will stay with a reader for days, and even weeks after they've read the book. Those are the type of books I, as a reader, seek out.

A friend is someone you hold dear:
Someone who is always there, through thick and thin;
Someone who is only a phone call away.

A friend is someone you can always rely on:
Someone who is there to share your thoughts with;
Someone to listen, no matter the subject.

A friend is someone you can feel comfortable with:
Someone you can sit silently beside, without conversation;
Someone you do not need to fill the quiet moments with.

A friend is someone you can trust:
Someone who will guard your deepest secrets;
Someone who will never let you down.

A friend is someone who is not judgmental:
Someone who will gently offer advice and opinions,
Yet, someone who is not overbearing or critical.

A friend is someone who can keep you grounded:
Someone who can help you see through your obstacles;
Someone to shoulder you through life's trials.

A friend is someone who shares unconditionally:
Someone to laugh and to cry with;
Someone to lean on, through both the good and the bad.

A friend is someone you choose wisely,
For a friend is your own mirrored image:
Someone to compliment your own self;
Someone who indicates who you are as a person.

A friend.... is what you are to me.
Julia Templeton

Yes. We not only get Monarchs, we get tons of Fritillary caterpillars, which eat Passion Vine. The Monarchs eat our Mexican Milkweed and make their chrysalises on the Passion Vine. I had to seriously cut back an enormous vine which had made it impossible to pass through our arbor. Yard guys come today, so I don't have to bag it.
Yay! Hope all is well with you and your new kitten!

I got down on my knees today,
And said a prayer for you,
For you are always in my heart,
And I often think of you,

I asked the Lord to send his angels,
To protect my dearest friend,
I prayed that all the joy and happiness,
You have will never end,

I asked the Lord to comfort you,
When you are feeling blue,
And when you have a tear,
He'll wipe away that too,

I asked the Lord to bless our friendship,
So our ways will never part,
For true friends always stick together,
For we're in each others hearts. Have a
Very Blessed and beautiful week
