Was soll man tun, wenn man als Produzent und Dj mal ein Problem mit dem Equipment hat? Nützlich Tipps an der Hotline erfragen? Den TÜV rufen? Wohl kaum, doch für DJ Katch, der mit seiner Akai MPC 3000 ein paar Turbulenzen erfahren musste, lag die Antwort auf der Hand. Der Perfektionist der Studiotechnik, Efe, wohnte schließlich in derselben Stadt und war nur ein paar Minuten entfernt. Trotz der bislang eher flüchtigen Bekanntschaft der Beiden, stimmte der musikalische Austausch auf Anhieb und man entschloss sich spontan eine Session aus der technischen Hilfe zu machen. Die dabei entstandenen Beats entpuppten sich im Nachhinein als so gelungen, dass die gemeinsamen Produkte sofort von Kool Savas, Snaga & Pillath, Manuellsen, Franky Kubrick und anderen Künstlern verwendet wurden. Und so war es kein Wunder, dass die zufällige Begegnung zu einer permanenten Kooperation wurde. Erfahrungen hatten beide genug, sei es Katch, der schon Kool Savas, Sabrina Setlur und Snaga & Pillath mit Beats versorgte, oder Efe, dessen Produktionen und Engineering bei Mike Crush, einem No Doubt Remix, Patrice und Joy Denalane Verwendung fanden. Man entschloss sich, aufgrund des nicht zu leugnenden Erfolges, den Weg fortzusetzen und auf die nächste Stufe zu bringen. Die beiden Soundtüftler bauten also gemeinsam, das von Katch gegründete „Goldmine Studio“ aus und statteten es mit Material und Equipment aus. So war man in der Lage, in zwei separaten Studioräumen Produktion, Mixing und Recording auf höchstem Level anzubieten. Ob ein MC straßentaugliche Beats für seine Rhymes sucht, oder sich eine Soul-Diva ihren nächsten Radiohit veredeln lassen möchte, das dynamische Duo DJ Katch & Efe erarbeitet die passenden Arrangements mit Hilfe von Samples, frei eingespielte Beats und Melodien und kreativer Vielfalt. Immer mit einem offenen Ohr über die Genregrenzen hinaus und bereit sich in Jam-Sessions durch fähige Musiker inspirieren zu lassen, wollen Katch & Efe Beats abliefern, die durch ihre Varianz glänzen und „nicht einfach nur 3 Minuten monoton durchrattern,“ wie Efe erklärt. Der Zufall mag der Kooperation der beiden Frankfurter DJ Katch und Efe auf die Sprünge geholfen haben, doch dank ihres Ansehens gilt die Zusammenarbeit heute als eines der heißesten Teams der deutschen HipHop-Szene.
DJ KATCH & EFE aka THE KINGSTRUMENTALS
Sometimes you need a helping hand. Even as a DJ and producer the equipment sometimes needs extra care. But what to do? Dial up the hotline? Probably not, but when DJ Katch experienced some rough weather with his Akai MPC 3000, the answer was close at hand. The perfectionist of studio equipment, Efe, lived around the corner and was just a phone call away. Even though both knew each other only by chance, they hit it off immediately, especially in regards to music, and decided to turn the equipment emergency into a jam session. The resulting beats turned out so well, that the collective effort was picked up by acts such as Kool Savas, Snaga & Pillath, Manuellsen, Franky Kubrick, Rapsoul and others. So it seemed to make perfect sense to let the chance encounter grow into a permanent cooperation. Both protagonists were not lacking in experience, as Katch had catered beats for Kool Savas, Sabrina Setlur and Snaga & Pillath while Efe's production and engineering skills had been welcomed by Mike Crush, a No Doubt remix, Patrice and Joy Denalane. Building on the success that their venture generated, DJ Katch & Efe decided to step up to the challenge and bring their work to the next level. Said and done, they reworked Katch's own “Goldmine Studio” and prepped it with material and equipment, so as to be able to use two separate recording rooms for production, mixing and recording on the highest level. No matter whether an MC was looking for credible beats to match his rhymes or whether a soul diva wanted to pimp her next hit for the radio, our dynamic duo DJ Katch & Efe was sure to help out with whatever arrangements were necessary. Out of their creative hands came samples, manually arranged beats and melodies and lots of creative outpour which always had the certain openness regardless of genre boundaries. Katch & Efe want to provide beats that shine in their variance and do not just “clatter along monotonously for 3 minutes”, as Efe puts it. Their cooperation may be the result of a mere chance meeting but due to their great reputation Frankfurt's own DJ Katch and Efe have become one of Germany's hottest teams in hiphop.
