Fondering was born in 1993 on the Maroni river, a border river between Suriname and French Guiana in the Amazonian forest. They are a family band of drummers, all from the same village, and from the same roots: the Fania. Twelve men, cousins or brothers, coming from 'noire marron' origins. The marrons were fugitive slaves who ran away from Dutch plantations in the 17th century to hide in the deepest corners of the forest up the river. They thus managed to keep their African culture intact. A strong culture as well as a rich language (bushitongo) which is a mixture of many other dialects- French, Dutch, English, Spanish, and African. They play traditional music called Aleke. Fondering sounds like Africa, beats at the community pace, and makes you feel the roots and vibes of the old continent. The album Djompo Tji, released in october 2006, offers fifteen tracks including a twenty four minutes live in Paris la Villette where they toured in 2005. Koloni, Maku and Soulu do the vocals. As for the rhythm it is hands and drums.
