Intelligently beautiful and clouded sparseness. Two ways you could describe this debut effort from Sicilian duo Koom. H. Muted funk. Meandering techno. Bourbon driven jazz. It’s all here. The perfect complement to smoked salmon and asparagus. The ideal soundtrack whilst cocooned in satin sheets. There’s no dancefloor numbers here, and nor should there be. Just melodic beats layered over sensual rhythms that reminisce a summery breeze.

Koom.H is another group fresh on the scene, bringing to us a refreshing blend of nujazz, funk, soul, groove and ambience, all rolled into one on their debut self titled album. It reminds at times of Portishead meeting acid jazz, but it can also take a more tribal turn or even lead into a dark feel. Every track seems to have its own original facet and it is this that makes this such an exciting release.
Rain opens the album and has classic written all over it. It is an emotional, nujazz symphony, which is very down tempo yet extremely powerful. The sample of rain falling in the background of the track slots right in and one can really feel this track reach out and grab you. Koom.H picked the perfect way to start their album and my ears were right at attention after this.
Song for Mozambique starts with a rolling, tribal intro, before moving into a deep, soulful ambience – a vibe which drifts towards funk but maintains the soul on Mr Cool, coming in at track three. Ghost Paradise is a nice, laid back piano swing number with a punching beat and a spooky, almost “alien-ish” sample is layered over the top towards the end. When you hear the track, you will know what I mean.
Come to Me is an interesting piece of nujazz spiced with samba sounds. It’s very original and unique. We are then thrown forward a couple more gears into really driving, rolling bass and up tempo funk. Considering the tone of the album until this point, this caught me off guard at first, but the change proves to work well. The track, Home, is a real thumper.
Move Your Funk takes us back to an almost downbeat, electro-disco funky feel before moving onto the hard ambience of Estate. Don Vito Corleone takes on a very sombre mood from the start, leading us into a deep sense of foreboding. Just For A While then drops us back to the slow swinging jazz vibe, with a nice piano overlay.
The CD is concluded with The Dining Rooms Rework of Rain. It provides a different outlook to this track that kicked off proceedings and is just as good as the original.
Koom.H have taken many influences from a range of genres to rework them into their own conglomeration of musical brilliance. Emotional, relaxed, powerful and also subtle at the same time, Koom.H have more than made their mark with their debut album. A fantastic first effort and I urge all of you to give it a try. It won’t disappoint.

Koom.H is a Sicilian project manned by DJ's Salvo Borrelli and Massimo Napoli, resident DJ at Mercati Generali in Catania, with die-hard producer Salvo Dub. Working together, they unify their different musical origins giving life to an original sort of techno-jazz style. Their debut album opens with "Rain", an intense tune with deep atmospheres. A jazz trumpet mute converse with a classic piano, although almost in contrast. The same melancholic feeling starting the album resurfaces in the last track, which is a rework by The Dining Room of the same song "Rain" where the beat is more marked by the drum. The second tune is a cover of an Archie Shepp composition. The style is nearly lounge and could be associated to those collections of jazz classics remixed by contemporary producers. The third track "Mr. Cool" just displays how detailed the production is on this album. It is a thumping funky bass that trespasses the tune from cool ambient into acid jazz. It is almost visible the scene of Mr. Cool attending a party in France's Cote d'Azure at sunset. "Ghost In Paradise" starts with a jazz drum kick but sound effects and piano chords make it quite cinematic. It could be a spy movie chase-up in the streets of Paris, on the contrary the title suggests rather different moods: the ethereal and spiritualistic ambience of a ghost going around in paradise. "Come to Me" is the fifth track of the album reaching the peak of yearning as represented. Ambient meets jazz courtesy of the touch Marco Bianchi on piano but also from the emphasis in the singing style. The rhythmic texture is remarkably interesting as highlighted by percussions and bass. The following track "Home" was written with Stefano Ghittoni (The Dining Rooms/Double Beat) and is a piece of bastard jazz mixing together Detroit techno, batucada flavours and epic drum solos. Their first single "Move your funk" is track 7 in the album; a tune based on their Afro and soul background with influences from funk and breakbeat to spiritual voices. "Estate" is a tune that spreads all the heath of the season to which is dedicated. The feeling is relaxed. It's a track inviting imaginary moods where sound effects transcend, from the skilful touch of Paolo Fedreghini. "Don Vito Corleone" is a piece paying homage to a hugely popular, Sicilian character of literature and cinema. "Just for a while" is the second last track in the album, before The Dining Rooms' re-work of "Rain". Jazz colours melt into resonances that virtually recall Trip-Hop, a trumpet solo transcends remarkably but delicately.

Spacey keys and heavy beats from Koom H -- the latest in a line of great Italian combos who mix acoustic instrumentation with well-chosen samples and programs! The sound here is almost a rougher take on the Schema mode -- one that's more abstract than work on that label, but still filled with a range of solid instrumental moments, and a real love of acoustic bass bits and drums! That style's no surprise, really -- given that Schema artists The Dining Rooms, Marco Bianchi, and Paolo Fedrighini all help out on the record -- and although most titles are instrumentals, there's a few vocal numbers here that are especially great. Titles include a remake of Archie Shepp's "Song For Mozambique", plus "Mr Cool", "Ghost In Paradise", "Home", "Estate", "Move Your Funk", "Don Vito Corleone", "Just For A While", and "Rain".

El trío Koom.h (Massimo Napoli, Salvo Düb aka Salvo Bruno y Salvo Borrelli), al que seguía la pista tras escuchar sus prometedoras primeras producciones, incluidas en diversas compilaciones, ha debutado finalmente con este álbum homónimo, editado en el sello Big Sur, del que puede considerarse un muy digno representante. Difícilmente este primer trabajo podía sorprender, porque temas como Mr. cool o Move your funk ya habrán llamado la atención anteriormente (los seguidores de las ediciones de Schema seguramente recuerden que Mr. Cool es el tema inicial de Break n’ bossa more funk into it chapter 7), mientras que Ghost in paradise y Home ya figuraban en el vinilo que precedió a esta edición. No obstante, los temas nuevos son igualmente convincentes, algunos excelentes, de modo que Koom.h confirma al trío italiano como una de las formaciones revelación de este año. Este quedará como uno de los debuts más logrados y estimulantes, y a buen seguro que le valdrá al trío sus primeros entusiastas seguidores, los mismos que esperarán espectantes la salida de un nuevo álbum.
Por lo pronto, cuando un disco se abre con un tema tan bello y emotivo como Rain, un corte de nu-jazz downtempo, atmosférico, con la sugerente voz de Claudia Bernath, caben pocas dudas acerca de su interés. Muy probablemente Rain sea considerado como una de las composiciones más memorables de Koom.h, aunque sólo es representativo de una faceta del trío. Y es que el resto del álbum está compuesto, a partes iguales, por temas uptempo, fusiones de house, jazz y funk de carácter bailable, y por piezas downtempo jazzísticas. De la primera categoría, que es la que predomina en la primera parte, destacan producciones como Ghost in paradise o Home, dos temas que se ganarán su hueco en las pistas, mientras que de la segunda resultan irresistibles Come to me, otro gran tema de nu-jazz vocal, Estate, que tiene el sabor del mejor lounge y Don Vito Corleone, que sí tiene un aire lo suficientemente inquietante como para que resulte adecuado tan imponente título (¿para cuándo The Godfather revisited?). En cualquier caso, sean temas orientados a las pistas o ideales para relajarse, todos revelan un magnífico trabajo de producción y son brillantes y equilibradas fusiones de instrumentación real y electrónica. Muy recomendable.

It has been a long time since we last heard of The Invisible Session. Their ’06 album gained general consensus in the Nu Jazz scene presenting a repertoire of spiritual/deep-jazz compositions. These have been remixed by hot names among club djs (Phil Asher; Panoptikum; 2Banks Of Four; Faze Action…). Two new tracks in this 12” single represent the final tiles composing a forthcoming album that will contain all the remixes done for The Invisible Session project. On side A Koom-H retouched "My Inspiration" using Funky/Deep House although the beginning of the track sounds Broken. Certainly a tune designed for groovy clubs and groovy people. The beat recurs in never-ending loops and it feels like it you don’t want to stop it. As opposed to that, side B offers the Mitchell & Dewbury mix of “I’ll Be Your Wings”. The sweet female voice from the original version, adorned with a new arrangement, creates a spontaneous modern Bossa. The musicians, from the piano to the horns, perform in a crescendo which culminates in an explosive finale. Thanks to the quality and variety of the mixes included, The Invisible Session's remixed album is going to be an excellent recording you cannot miss.
I laboratori di K-space puntano a sviluppare la sensibilità dei partecipanti in rapporto all’improvvisazione e alla sua attuazione. Attraverso una serie di esercizi pratici, i partecipanti familiarizzano con particolari sfaccettature dell’improvvisazione, fino ad isolare determinati pattern e a rielaborarli, producendo risultati sempre diversi, nel rispetto della musica sciamanica siberiana. Suoni e ritmi incantatori e regolari, manipolati attraverso l’apporto della Kozyrev’s Space, la “macchina del tempo” creata dall’astrofisico russo Nikolai Kozyrev (da cui il trio prende nome), che sfruttando gli schemi paralleli presenti nella musica, crea delle strutture in cui il tempo appare centrifugato o deformato, inducendo i partecipanti a delle esperienze telepatiche simili ai viaggi sciamanici.
Il laboratorio è aperto alla partecipazione e al contributo di qualsiasi strumento musicale o anche della sola voce, e soprattutto qualunque sia il livello di capacità dei partecipanti.
