Born in transit between the echoing halls of Rozelle Neighbourhood Centre and the hum and creak of a city flat is the latest offering from Sydney's La Huva, their second full length album Midnight Black & White.
Since the release of their debut Pretty Mile, La Huva has continued to win over live audiences in the company of The Bats, Knievel, Youth Group, 78 Saab, The Small Goods, The Cannanes, The Small Knives, Louis Tillett and The Givegoods to name just a few, while receiving healthy airplay on community radio all over the country.
A band that has walked both sides of the line between glory and disaster, La Huva has managed to maintain a loyal following without a publicity machine to speak of. With an early history of trying anything live from short wave radio melodies to scratched Mario Lanza records La Huva have also started, through the strength of their songs, to hit on something they may call their own and it has developed in its own unhurried way. Pop sensibilities meet shambolism, dissent and invention while the village idiot knocks at the gate of guitar pop heaven.
"La Huva..push the guitars out of the way to make a epic pop song on a shoestring budget, which appears about to fall apart but cleverly never quite does" - Drum media on One Day's Luck
Midnight Black and White realised its ambitious potential on the eight tracks of a second hand reel to reel tape machine. Inspired by unbeatable optimism and the solid fact that the likes of Brian Wilson, cassette deck heroes Guided By Voices and The Go-Betweens in their early years had delivered such great records under similar circumstances, La Huva decided to put their trust in the performance to the turning wheels on the deck and the happy accidents that occur in the heat of the take. Its the live recording that remains the thing, capturing the raw energy, the uplifting melodies and the sweet collisions that La Huva are becoming known for.
Since the release of Midnight Black and White on Melbourne label Cavalier , La Huva has been touring the album interstate in Qld and Victoria to warm crowds and very positive reviews.
Rolling Stone called it "world- class arch guitar pop….a rare and well rounded thing, a classic". The album has been compared to the likes of The Verlaines , Arcade Fire, Big Star and The Go-Betweens. The radio single One Day's Luck was the King's Pick on JJJ recently and the band went in for a chat with Robbie Buck on the Australian music show. Future plans include a tour of Europe hopefully mid next year and of course more songs and trips interstate to spread the word.
Midnight Black & White is released on Cavalier Music through Shock.
