“The playing is expert, not overindulged… Cudmore delivers a steady flow of conscience, contemplations, with an unaffected clarion-like voice.” -Sean Flinn, The Coast
(Halifax, NS)
“Grade: A+… it was the best show of the night.” .. - Tangible Sounds
“Last night I couldn’t help but fall in love with them...” – Much Music
“I was blown away and captivated right after the hit the stage and have been a fan ever since… a sound that you just can’t find anywhere else…” NXEW (North By East West)
“...when the Halifax/Vancouver quartet starts to play, you get sucked into the sounds.” – Hero Hill
“Just imagine listening to the Cranberries churned up with Buck 65. Or like Bonobo remixing the Camera Obscura... Or think about the limitless possibilities of what might happen if female jungalist MC wore your grandma's old cardigans. File next to Scratch Bastid or Kid Koala. Maybe one day they'll be signed to Anticon and open for Why?, Dose One and the lot of 'em. They deserve it.”- Turquoise Wave Sights (Saskatoon, SK)
“I was beyond impressed... - Beyond Robson (Vancouver, BC)
“...an art-folk that sounds kind of like it was being beamed to us from a far away planet.”- Sled Island Festival Guide (Calgary, AB)
“Vancouver art-folk outfit Language-Arts is taking its quirky mash-up indie rock, chamber pop and hip hop on the road this summer... and is continuing to generate some serious buzz with its live show.” -Jen Zoratti, Uptown Magazine (Winnipeg, MB)
“Literate and verbose, Language-Arts flood their verses with word-jumbles and playful imagery. Dense and classically-trained instrumental passages form the base, while slow
moving double-bass lines swell under Kristen Cudmore’s rapid-fire pixie-rap. Essentially, they’re blending disarming indie-pop with classical influences and an ear for jazzy hip-hop textures…She does it with an unaffectedly childish voice, and is not afraid to speak-sing and hold notes with a charming and pure voice, akin to Joanna Newsom except not abrasive or so obviously put-on... they’re clearly articulated…There’s a wealth of creativity here (4 track, Small Run EP), more than most bands use for an entire album.” - Two Way Monologues (Toronto, ON)
“... Occupying a musical twilight zone where folk and hip-hop collide with art rock.” - The Chronicle Herald (Halifax, NS)
“Her wordplay and flow causes one to recall a young Queen Latifah.” -CBC 3
“Language Arts songs jump from airy, delicate melodies... to darker efforts with Aesop Rock-type vocals, and at their best they combine both... at once experimental, ground-breaking, and listenable in a very addictive way.” -She Does the City (Toronto, ON)
“Kristen Cudmore isn’t your average, everyday emcee. A quiet woman, she’s barely above a whisper during a phone interview. Put a microphone in front of her and this little lady can compete with any of the big boys.” - Victoria News Group (Victoria, BC)
“Perhaps if Morcheeba play an acoustic set coped with the Cardigans would get such a sound:) Just, bright and cool…Live, joyful, beautiful music.” – From Russian Translation, The Music Hub (Russia)
“... beautiful melodies while delivering a torrent of lyrics... You can hear careful crafting in the words and their delivery.” - The Coast (Halifax, NS)
“Burning hunk of junk! It's never fun to have your tour van burst into flames, but in the case of Vancouver's Language-Arts, at least the vehicle had the decency to catch fire before the band left town…As of press time, Language-Arts is on the road, playing dates as far a field as Calgary. Let's hope the band's apparently cursed vehicle doesn't flame out somewhere in the Rockies.” - The Georgia Straight (Vancouver, BC)
"The British Columbian folk-hop group Language-Arts blends the singer / songwriter aesthetic with hip hop from its cultural roots, updated with a fierce blend of rapping and folk-rock instrumentation." - Seattle Sound Magazine (Seattle, WA)
“...for rarely are we treated to an act so 'unique' and 'cutting edge…”- 24 Hours Magazine (Vancouver, BC)
"This will probably be the best show of the year. If you don't go, you will both be kicking yourself later and missing the opportunity to see such superstars in the flesh." – The Coast (Halifax, NS) ..
Great CD review in this issue of Exclaim Magazine "This album is mostly soothing and subdued, with Kristen Cudmore's voice making quick, pointed gestures. It's a colourful contrast, but one that has morphed into a setting that's more a lively painting than a basic rainbow. "Cavity" sets the folk-tinged jazz tone to where Language Arts are going but settles fast into "White Socks in Birkenstocks" and then the title track, which gives the notion that times are getting poppier and sillier"
Just a reminder to listen to LANGUAGE-ARTS on THIS GREAT WHITE NORTH. It's an ALL CANADIAN music show FRIDAYS 4:30-6pm CST on 91.7 KOOP FM in Austin, Texas. You can listen online at www.KOOP.org.
Hi & thanks for the add,

It's called L'Octoberage and it's at a place called 'Le Mirage', a converted 48 passenger coach and surrounding gardens at 345 E 1st Ave (across from Artech Lofts).
There will be homemade perogies, ethically raised pork, home made beer, hot chocolate, and several musical acts, including Acres and Acres, Jon Mckiel, and Klarka Weinwurm (all from Halifax).

allow, i like your new song. i will see you on the 28th and cheer, support and hug. best luck and days like an olive yelp, a giddy squirm expelled every time she gets saved from Brutus. I love spinach.

A beautiful paradox of breezy folk and a jazz-tinted spirit, delicate
strings that's bolstered by sweet vocals and crisp acoustic guitars. A
touchtone of strong songwriting wrapped in music that's rich with
poetry, painting a lustrous portrait that's nothing short
of charming.
