Band MembersThere is a lazy band of loose-limbed artists, bohemians, actors, perverts and degenerates who accompany Larkin and lend her tiny pieces of their soul for the greater good of the music: Orion Rigel Domisse: vocals, banjo, and uke. Brian Carpenter: vocals, accordion, harmonium, and trumpet. Jordan Voelker: Vocals, viola. Sophia Dixon: voice and fountain pen. Antonia Dixon: voice and paintbrush. Cassie Kauffman: voice and scholarly wisdom. Tom Van Buskirk: percussion, understanding. Micah Blue Smaldone: guitar genius, bass master. Caleb Mulkerin: guitar, banjo and punk conscience. Colleen Kinsella: voice, accordion, percussion earth mama. Chriss Sutherland: voice, bass, ferocious magic. Lara Polangco: rainbow family singer-songwriter. Haley O'Connor: den mother. Michael Gira: trusted producer, magnet of darkness, beloved gothfather.

   About Larkin Grimm
Michael Gira says, "Larkin is a magic woman. She lives in the mountains in north Georgia. She collects bones, smooth stones, and she casts spells. She worships the moon. She is very beautiful, and her voice is like the passionate cry of a beast heard echoing across the mountains just after a tremendous thunder storm, when the air is alive with electricity. I don't consider her folk though - she is pre folk, even pre- music. She is the sound of the eternal mother and the wrath of all women. She goes barefoot everywhere, and her feet are leathery and filthy. She wears jewels, glitter, and glistening insects in her hair. She's great! We're doing a record together soon for YGR. " Young God Records Larkin Grimm was born in Memphis, Tennessee four years after Elvis died. Her parents were members of a community of energy healers called The Holy Order of MANS. When this cult disbanded, the Grimm family moved to the Appalachian Mountains so that Larkin's father could devote himself to the practice of learning old time fiddle tunes and her Mother could carry on her mission of bringing light to the world through singing hippie values to the children of her hillbilly friends. It was a sweet existence. The water was pure. The air was clean. The food was delicious. There was a spirit of oneness in that Appalachian valley, but soon the exhaust and consumption of the nearby cities began to creep up into the mountains and Larkin, nearly a grown woman, took off with bitterness and anger in her heart trying to find the source of this pollution, to search and destroy. She charmed her way into elite institutions of higher learning - Yale, Harvard, and Brown - and she was mega grossed out by the "education" they were selling. So she hitchhiked across Alaska, staring down bears and grizzly old men, she ducked in and out of communes and cults of many kinds, she sang songs to hipsters in fashionable cities, she spent days locked in mental institutions and in jail cells, fell in and out of love, in and out of consciousness, in and out of sobriety and society, just searching for the answers. And every time she thought she knew the answer, she wrote a song about it, and sang the song until she realized she didn't really know. And Larkin is somewhere searching still, and if you believe in her, someday soon she will find the answer and sing it for you. !

"I came with iron in my bones" is what you call too happy for the album?

You're something else, Larkin.

I like yer new photo,, and I enjoy yer songs..
I like yer crazy sanity.
I am off..
probably go fishin by myself in the mysterious cold darkness of the night.
because..
well...
I feel art is too competitve sometimes.. and it was never my intention to compete while making art.
-- making music and drawings and paintings is easy for me..
but fishing..
that is not up to me.
-- it is not a competition...
it is either I eat.. or I starve.. and it is up to GOD...
not a human being.

For Larkin's just beginnings of Terror we're just able to bear.

And why we adore her so is she serenely disdains to destroy us.

Thanks for playing for us tonight, Larkin. We (I) was driving around like a headless chicken, cursing strip malls and gas stations, trying to find the Place (the Space?) and thought I'd miss you for sure. Sometimes things work out.

Ironic to hear you sing in an industrial park, though appropriate, and the Space was quite cozy and intimate.

The new songs are (of course) fabulous.

Too bad I lack a gramophone and a little dog to go with it.

Maybe you should try putting your next album out on wax tablets or if you want to be really hip and modern, parchment, even.

I'll look for you in Brooklyn.

xoxo

The Stars Are Underground

May 1 2008 2:40 PM

FINALLY . " The Stars Are Underground" the legendary low budget documentary film concerning alternative, hardcore and independent music way back in Celtic Kitten 90's Dublin is up and embedded on it's page in three easily digested parts. Come take a look if you get a chance.

you will also notice clips for Mexican Pets and Jubilee Allstars among others .

all best + peace

I've crawled all around Georgia and though I knew her like the back of my hand, yet from the Blue Ridge to Stone Mountain, from the swamps of Savannah to the hills of Athens, I've never heard her sing so spectral, elfin, and clear.
