Picture this: a peaceful, tranquil village in Kent, with just a couple of corner shops and a few rows of charming little houses. You can hear the birds singing all day long, and if you see three cars drive past your window in a day its newsworthy. A favourite for those longing to retire away from the hustle & bustle, the community shuffles from day to day in undisturbed serenity.
Suddenly, the silence is shattered by a booming female voice (remember she’s only 12yrs old). The birds scatter, animals run for cover & the atmosphere is broken.
“I used to love to put the radio on, plug my headphones in, turn the volume up as loud as it would go, and sing along horrendously loudly to whatever song was on. I don’t suppose any of it was in tune, and it used to drive my family(and the neighbours) crazy!”
And so, a star was emerging from the most unlikely of places……Beltinge Village, Kent…(the heart of the music industry!)
With a voice you have to hear to believe, its reminiscent of any of the great divas…so she says…but still sticking & distinctive. Yet with such power & range, its easy to think her songs are all power ballads or oversung hype.
“To me, singing isn’t about showing what you can do in every single song. It’s boring-and tiring to listen to! I sing to match the emotion of the song; some songs would be ruined by vocal acrobatics, yet others get carried with it.”
People inevitably draw comparisons though, but Laura is surprisingly modest despite her massive talent.
“It’s always nice when people compare you to people you admire, but l never really take them seriously! To me, these megastars are legends rather than “normal” people, like they've always been famous & great at what they do, you know?”
Laura Warwick, Not just a singer, but a songwriter too, but even that she does her own way, untraditional & a little quirky.
“I'm a bit weird…l actually find if l do something mind-numbingly boring, like mowing the lawn, or hoovering, my mind has room to wander and suddenly l'll get an idea. Once l've had that trigger, the rest comes relatively easily. And it keeps my mum happy! I tend to write songs that have slightly different angles to the “norm”; I find it hard to write about being “in love” or being cheated on, there’s just too many clichés that try & find their way into the lyrics.”
Yet talent alone does not guarantee success. How does one girl make sure she’s different enough to stand out?
“I don’t really try to be “different”, as if there’s a million other non-descript female singers and only one or two are worth noticing. I don’t compare myself to a standard. I do my own thing & make music my own way. I try to show myself in my music, my personality, my bordering-on-evil sense of humour, and l make sure l enjoy myself & have fun along the way.”
And having fun seems to be the most important thing. Unlike some who go in search of fame & fortune, simply for the fame & fortune, Laura really loves every aspect of what she does.
“I love performing live. It’s so much more rewarding than singing into an expectant microphone in the studio. Having said that, l love working on fresh material, going new places & trying out new things. When its something you love it’s not really work, so long hours in the studio, or coming home in the early hours from a gig, are all part of what l've wanted since l was that little girl in that sleepy village.”
