Left Brain was fully formed in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2005 and began playing shows in October 2005. Originally the product of collaboration between John Allen (guitar) and Steven Keator (drums 2005-2007), the story of this band is an evolution of sound, technical exploration, lineup change, and continuously maturing musical mentality.
Lineups & Discography
The Bob Album (Unreleased, 2006). With the addition of Tristin Rogers (vocals) and Dr. Thunda (Michael Clifford, bass) Left Brain rapidly picked up creative speed and with in months, recorded a 10-track demo album with Bob Reynolds. Capturing some of the ligher-spirited Left Brain material and early "jam band" sound, the songs "Mass" and "Making Time" received rotation on New Mexico college radio.
"We got Bobed on this album" says Thunda. "We were hoping it would come out a lot better... it was really a lesson learned for us. By the time it was done, we were deep in a new batch of material that we were more excited about, and decided not to release it."
Bury the Facade (Allen, Keator, Rogers, Clifford: 2007). Recorded with Sid Garcia at Sight 16 Studios, Bury the Facade is an exploration of a much darker and more aggressive sound.
"At the time a lot of our lives were being crossed with issues of domestic violence and it sort of clicked. Seeing this happen really effected us. That's how we came up with ideas for Persephone, our 4 part song" says Rogers.
Riding on the momentum from constant live performances, relentless promoting and a successful CD release show, Left Brain was voted 2nd Place for “Best Metal Band” and 3rd Place for “Best New/Emerging Band” in Alibi Magazine - Best of Albuquerque 2007.
In May of 2007 Left Brain won New Mexico Music Awards for “Best Rock-Metal” with the 8-minute song The Waste and “Best Artist’s Website”. The single Take What You Need is still on regular rotation on 104.1 The Edge's local music feature.
"I was surprised by the success we've had. I never thought we'd play 80+ shows or win awards" says Allen. "It's been a lot of work though."
Early Fall 2007, Left Brain parted ways with original drummer Steve Keator. "Things had run their course. It was tough. It was the beginning of a change in lifestyle and direction" says Thunda. "We were lucky to find Thomas [O'Brian] under a rock in Albuquerque. His energy was awesome." says Allen.
Solipsism (Allen, Clifford, O'Brian: Summer 2009). In Spring 2008, vocalist Tristin Rogers left the band. "It didn't stop us from writing more material as an instrumental. The ideas and energy were there, we just kept going with it" says Allen. "Our goal was to write metal for the thinking man."
Thunda: "[with this lineup] we were able to move forward in a more technical and pyschedelic direction. This is the type of stuff I've always wanted to do musically. I hope we can tap deeper into it in the future... I've enjoyed the instrumental shows and have been surprised that people dig it."
Left Brain is currently recording Solipsism at Sight 16 Studios. Allen says, "We are still figuring out what we will do for the vocals, but there will be vocals."
