The Lifeboat Foundation is a nonprofit organization devoted to researching the possibilities of existential risk from powerful modern technologies, such as those based on genetics, nanotechnology, and robotics/AI, and proposing policy options to avert or minimize the risks. We pursue a variety of options focused on the effort to accelerate development of defensive technologies — including anti-biological virus technologies, nanotechnological defensive strategies, and self-sustaining space colonies in case all else fails.
We believe that, in some situations, it might be feasible to relinquish technological capacity in the public interest (for example, we are against the U.S. government posting the recipe for the 1918 flu virus on the internet).
Our work is supported by a scientific advisory board, which contains a large number of notable scientists, futurists, philosophers and other thinkers who are concerned about the possibilities and risks of advanced technologies.
We have many of the best minds on the planet working on our "Project of Hope for the 21st Century"!

CURRENT PROGRAMS
AsteroidShield
To protect against devastating asteroid strikes.
BioShield
To protect against bioweapons and pandemics.
InternetShield
As the Internet grows in importance, an attack on it could cause physical as well as informational damage. An attack today
on hospital systems or electric utilities could lead to deaths. In the future an attack could be used to alter the output that is
produced by nanofactories worldwide leading to massive deaths.
NanoShield
To protect against ecophages and nonreplicating nanoweapons.
SecurityPreserver
To prevent nuclear, biological, and nanotechnological attacks from occurring by using surveillance and
sousveillance
to identify terrorists before they are able to launch their attacks.
Space Habitats
To build fail-safes against global existential risks by encouraging
the spread of sustainable human civilization beyond Earth.
FUTURE PROGRAMS
BioPreserver
To preserve animal life and diversity on the planet.
ClimateShield
To protect against global warming and other unwanted climate changes.
CommPreserver
Explores new communication technology for surviving existential events.
EnergyPreserver
If our civilization ran out of energy, it would grind to a halt, so Lifeboat Foundation is looking for solutions.
InfoPreserver
To preserve the information created by our civilization, including technology as well as art and culture.
LifePreserver
The program explores new life-extension methods, such as the work of Aubrey de Grey and Robert A. Freitas, Jr.
NeuroethicsShield
To prevent abuse in the areas of neuropharmaceuticals, neurodevices, and neurodiagnostics. Worst cases include
enslaving the world's population or causing everyone to commit suicide.
NuclearShield
To prevent nuclear holocaust including destruction of entire cities.
ParticleAcceleratorShield
To prevent, and also make plans on surviving when possible, particle accelerator mishaps including quantum vacuum collapse, mining the quantum vacuum, formation of a stable strangelet, and the creation of artificial mini-black holes.

It is the night which it is beautiful to believe in the light. The night is maybe only the day eyelid. Rather than to curse the darkness, let us light a candle, so small it is. Only the darkness has the power to open to the world the heart of a man. As The night administration does not know either time or space, the sleep has for him all the eternity ! It is only when it's dark that stars shine.

This is a great page. Its a great web site and concept. Well, its not really a concept, its a neccessity. Even if none of this stuff ever becomes a problem, it still needs to be safeguarded against. I can see this organization being an integral part of society and a household name in 20 or 50 years.
<span style='font-size:20px; font-weight:bold'>Hey Lifeboat Foundation, I just bought you as my PET! <a href='http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=361263053'>Click here</a> to find out how much I think you're $$WORTH$$!</span>
"Many people are shrinking from the future and from participation in the movement toward a new, expanded reality. And, like homesick travelers abroad, they are focusing their anxieties on home. The reasons are not far to seek. We are at a turning point in human history... We could turn our attention to the problems that going to the moon certainly will not solve ... But I think this would be fatal to our future... A society that no longer moves forward does not merely stagnate; it begins to die." -- Anthropologist Margaret Mead, "Man on the Moon," Redbook Magazine, 1969
Please feel free to check out our new service lifenaut.com, a web-based storage space for organizing and preserving critical information about one's unique and essential characteristics. The purpose in creating this ex-vivo consciousness storage is to preserve one's individual consciousness so that it remains viable for possible uploading with consciousness software into a cellular regenerated or bionanotechnological body by future medicine and technology. This technology may develop within the next 20 to 30 years.
With Lifenaut.com you get 7 gigs of space to store images, movies, sounds, documents, etc. There is absolutely no cost to this and no obligation. Please feel free to check it out and let us know what you think after trying it.
"On Earth today, it's Thanksgiving. If the crew has to eat synthetic meat loaf, I want it to look like turkey." -- Captain James T. Kirk (Charlie X) TOS
"Risk more than others think is safe. Care more than others think is wise. Dream more than others think is practical. Expect more than others think is possible."
And now 'tis man who dares assault the sky . . . And as we come to claim our promised place, Aim only to repay the good you gave, And warm with human love the chill of space.
— Prof. Thomas G. Bergin, Yale University, 'Space Prober.' This was the first poem to be launched into orbit about the Earth. It was inscribed on the instrument panel of a satellite called Traac launched from Cape Kennedy on November 15, 1961.
