   Louise Shaffer's Blurbs
About me:
I was born in Woodbridge, Connecticut and attended the Yale Drama School. After graduation I moved to New York City. Following a mercifully short stint as the worst-waitress-in-the-universe I landed a role in a Broadway production. For the next 20 years I worked as an actress on stage and in television. Appearing in such shows as Edge of Night, Search For Tomorrow, and All That Glitters. In 1981 after two previous nominations I won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Daytime Drama for my role of Rae Woodard on Ryan’s Hope.

Within six months of this crowning achievement, I was summarily “let go” from Ryan’s Hope, largely because I could not stop myself from turning 40. Despite now being “unemployable” as an actress, my mortgage payments continued to be due at the start of each month. Banks can be pesky institutions.

Soon I began writing scripts for the very show I was fired from only months before and thereby kicking off the second act of my professional career. For the next decade I wrote for numerous soap operas, earning some recognition and keeping the mortgage company happy.

In 1988 an earthquake shook our home in California. Before the aftershocks had stopped, my husband had bought a farm in Southern Georgia and begun packing the dishes. It was while living in the South that I began thinking that maybe I didn’t want to write scripts anymore. Maybe I should be telling my own stories instead of those generated by executives of a detergent company. Fortunately for me, the small southern town I found myself living in was full of stories.

In 2003 The Three Miss Margarets was published by Random House and the curtain went up on my career as an author. The book met with really positive reviews (thank you, God) and is now in something like its sixth printing. In 2005 The Ladies of Garrison Gardens continued where the first novel left off. I finished the triogy with the release of Family Acts in the Fall of 2007. Last year I submitted my fourth novel to my publisher; Seredipity is a different knid of book for me. It will be in bookstores on March 24th 2009. My mortgage company will be so pleased.
Who I'd like to meet:
I'd like to meet in person all the wonderful people from book clubs I've spoken with by phone.

Ha! Louise, I just read your blogged ode to the "Martha Stewarts on Crack" as I sometimes refer to myself on my mad days of domestic perfection seeking!

Hope your holiday was lovely and stressless...I just added "Serendipity" to the latest order for the library where I reference, and cannot wait til March!
