What people are saying about Love Is Dead. (buy above)

Blending indie folk rock, pop and electro Americana, Lowry's songs are moving and powerful...Tracks off the band's latest album 'Love is Dead' break the mold in more ways than one...The group's raw sound creates choruses that aren't easy to get out of one's head. The group is catchy and innovative and has the potential to make it big in 2009. -Shut Up! Magazine

Deft, inventive instrumention, coupled with Alex's vidid tales of life and love form a robust and spectacular personality that melts into each of Love is Dead's nine tracks. This "anti-folk" band has reinvented itself in a way that, once heard, won't be soon forgotten.Hittin' the Note

If Ok Computer is what happened when Britpop decided to listen to progressive rock, Love Is Dead is its Americana counterpoint: banjos, mandolins and guitars are layered with a prog-rock studio sensibility. Most of the songs on Love Is Dead are longer than your standard 3-minute pop ditty and involve several distinct movements (often thematically or musically linked), some even breaking out of the standard 4/4 time signature (I was able to find some sections in 7/4 and 6/4, but my counting may have been off). The guitar work on the album also calls to mind Radiohead, as some of the soaring riffs sound like those of Jonny Greenwood. Musically speaking, this is an interesting and rewarding album to listen to. - Online Rock

"…Once you collage the randomness of the Grandaddy-esque keyboard arrangements or Mates of State-like female melodies it begins to take a life all its own. When you throw in some moments that are reminiscent of Paulson and Elliott Smith, Lowry have created one of my favorite albums of the year." -Adam Roncaglione RABBIT HOLE MUSIC

"It's telling that the band mentions both Grizzly Bear and Mates Of State in their bio, since they often drift into the realms of each. This nomadic shift in moods that finds the band sounding like several different acts throughout the disc should probably be distracting, but it instead makes for an impressive and satisfying listening experience." MISHMASH MAGAZINE

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* "Deep and melancholy, yet enlightened and full of hope, Lowry's Love is Dead breaks all the rules of indie rock and then manages to sound as approachable and alluring as The Shins." SKOPE MAGAZINE

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* “You can’t help but get swept away in the often-beautiful sadness of this record. 3.5 stars.” MCKEESPORT DAILY NEWS

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* "simply, gorgeous." BURGOS

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Lowry is one of those bands that is a music critic's worst nightmare, and I mean that in the best way. Lowry has an unclassifiable sound that leads the listener reaching for comparisons that fade away a minute later. Yet, taken as a whole, Love Is Dead has a wonderful cohesiveness to it. Lowry often has a lo-fi, gentle yet lush sound. It is the type of sound that draws comparisons to Death Cab for Cutie and the Shins. Listen and you will find Americana, electronica, folk, and straight ahead pop. I haven't even touched on the banjos, electric guitars, and other sound melanges that are meticulously crafted throughout the album. They ensure that little treasures are discovered upon each additional listen, of which there should be many. - ATLANTA MUSIC GUIDE

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* "…the best part of this song [Whiskey] comes at 3:26 in as they break into a beautiful languid beat with a slide guitar refrain and piano chords underneath adding a superb lush feel… on the first single 'Face Behind Your Hands'…the guitars, vocals and arrangement all play off each other creating the songs own internal logic…'Roads' which has a nice Kinks-like feel and invokes some serious 60's vibes and then brought into today's music scene via the vocal blend and the stylistic shift created when the drums come in around the 3 minute mark and the funky guitar riff that come to the fore. Add the very tasteful guitar solo at the end and you have an all round winner." - 411

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* "In an era of the beloved 3½-minute indie rock song, Alex Lowry boldly writes epic-length songs that ambitiously and uniquely eschew traditional verse-chorus structure. This fact necessitates at least two listens to wrap your arms around the songs’ complexities. But unlike most bands attempting the epic rock song, Lowry’s long songs, with few over-indulgences, work beautifully…" - Jezebelmusic.com

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* "Lowry is wicked good at nailing that slightly askew sound. Even the quickest perusal of Love Is Dead will prove “Whiskey” is a thing of beauty, starting as displaced folk and ending as one of the best Mercury Rev songs never recorded. Songwriter Alex Lowry gives each song depth and nuance with some tricky and advanced songwriting while the band alternates between extended ruminations and radio-friendly firecrackers, all acoustic and all heartfelt. Despite the sadness in the sound it’s not a depressing record, rather an optimistic melancholy. Tracks like “One Thing” and “You Die Alone” have such a gorgeous flow to them you half expect to physically see the sound waves coming out your speakers. Special mention is deserved by album closer “The Road You Left On,” which is such an absolutely perfect winter song I can barely stand it." - Rock Sellout

What people are saying about Awful Joy

Voted one of the top 5 albums of 2005, Voted one of the top 5 live shows in Chicago in 2005---CHICAGO INNERVIEW MAGAZINE

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

"Lowry's psychedelic neo/anti-folk pop is an offbeat offshoot where the hurdy gurdy man takes us on a twisted magical mystery tour. Hot wired and intense, even in its quieter moments, this is challenging, innovative music that pushes established boundaries with alarming ease." CREATIVE LOAFING, ATLANTA

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Named One of the Top Emerging Artists of 2006 THE DELI MAGAZINE, NYC

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

"On the 13 tracks of the band's new release, Awful Joy, beauty, banality and brutality coexist fragile and sincere in fingerpicked guitars, whinnying harmonicas and cascading pianos. The result is as strange and beautiful as any acid excursion. As [Lowry] puts it in "Arkansas," sometimes the real world can ruin our good time, but it still contains the only magic that we know of, so what're you so scared of?" CHRIS GLENN, THE PITCH WEEKLY---KANSAS CITY

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

"Lowry's quietly strange brand of neo-folk music is akin to an ocean breeze stirring the hot, heavy summer air: It refreshes and delights, and leaves listeners smiling about the pleasant little surprises that await in life. Such a pleasing discovery is bound to unassumingly tuck itself away into one's soul, to be remembered and treasured for a long time to come." KATHERINE LATSHAW, ENCORE MAGAZINE---WILMINGTON/CAPE FEAR

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

". . .they are creating music that is timeless and groundbreaking. . . .More than just the production. . . the songs themselves come through as a force to be reckoned with", BLOCK MAGAZINE, NYC

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

"One of the true musical gems to come out of the past year. . .Rather than the typical verse/chorus/verse structure many of the tracks from their debut LP "Awful Joy" build slowly and subtly before reaching their cathartic peaks, GHOST MEDIA, CHICAGO

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

"If you're a fan of melodic, intelligent pop music in any form you owe it to yourself to check these guys out. Awful Joy is a spectacular album, and Alex Lowry's immense talent makes for an amazing show. . . Full of melodious hooks and emotional movement, the record is a testament to how overtly enjoyable pop music can be when it is stripped of self-consciousness and pretension. " DON BARTLETT, CHICAGO INNERVIEW MAGAZINE

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

"Lowry's ostensibly part of the neo-folk revival over-running the East Village, but this disc is all over the rock time line, from Ziggy-era Bowie to Yoshimi-Lips, with twangy intervals, chamber pop stops and even a prog-rock touch or two along the journey. They are not to be missed." JOHN SCHACT, CREATIVE LOAFING--CHARLOTTE

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

[Awful Joy] outdid my expectations by leaps and bounds at least half of the album would be capable of winning legions of fans. .... So far this gets local release of the year in my book, setting the bar pretty high for what is capable by independent New York musicians. URBAN FOLK MAGAZINE, NYC

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

"The way Lowry manages to wrestle a melody out of all the seemingly disconnected layers of sound is a beautiful mystery that, whether it be serendipity or sheer diligence, makes the songs not merely intriguing but flat out catchy. . . .It's not often, as in "4th of July" that you hear cello and banjo working together but it is that sort of collage of sound and Lowry's dreamy fits of language that make this record not just a solid work of art but such an unadulterated and immediate joy." ROBIN CRACKNELL, AMERICANA UK

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

"It's a mellow minefield. . .the singing isn't pretty, but it's earnest and sad and tough to ignore. His guitar work on the other hand, is pretty, and nimble and country-tinged too. This music isn't pop or rock or even alt-country, really, but a mish-mash of all three. Do not miss this band." BIRMINGHAM WEEKLY

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

"Lowry might be a bit off his rocker but he has a mastery for crafting clever and intelligent pop hooks. . . .The East Village might be the proper place for him to call home but after a single listen hell find himself at home in your stereo and music rotation." SMOTHER MAGAZINE

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

"Lowry has in 'Awful Joy' created an album of music that acts like water on a watercolor, blurring lines between genres and re-sorting them into something new and vital." DAILY VAULT, JASON WARBURG

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

"Love, self-discovery, fist fights, theres a little bit of everything on Awful Joy. Mostly love, though. I mean, there is a sunflower on the album cover." CITY WEEKLY, OMAHA

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

"Lush and orgasmic at times, the music can shift shapes and transcend forms just as easily as the curious lyrics." THE READER, OMAHA

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

"Their elegant mix of unpredictable song structures and dynamics, almost-morose melodies and tunes, and straight-beat grooves are along the same vein as recent works by Flaming Lips, Elf Power, Modest Mouse, and Portastatic. . . . .artistically spectacular." T. BALLARD LESEMANN, CHARLESTON CITY PAPER---CHARLESTON, S.C.
