A recent transplant to Kalamazoo, Michigan, Lucas Westcott grew up in New York’s Capital Region and studied traditional American folk music and claw hammer banjo with folk musician John Kirk. In college he played with a variety of bands ranging stylistically from rock, to Japanese pop. Lucas has engineered more than 15 live and studio albums including two of his own releases.
A largely acoustic singer/songwriter, Westcott’s music draws from influences including Townes Van Zandt, Johnny Cash, Todd Snider, and Ani DiFranco. His bare bones, rhythmically driven guitar accompanies punch line laden lyrics that tell stories ranging from family tragedy to quirky tales of romance.
Lucas has released two albums, 2008’s Addition by Subtraction and Something Old and Something New (2006). He has played dates to support these releases in New England, and the Midwest and has been featured at Chicago’s Folk You Songwriters Round, and the Tuesday Folk Series in Lawrence Kansas. In addition Lucas founded the short lived Sangamon Songwriters Series in Springfield Illinois, which featured national and regional acts like The Gordons and Jonathan Byrd.
He is currently working on songs for his third release slated for late 2010.
