"Luke's music combines all of the best bits of Neil Young, Rufus Wainwright and Damien Rice- truly splendid stuff"
- Phil Jackson - Specialist music presenter BBC Southern Counties Radio and BBC Radio Solent.
"A bit of folk, a bit of acoustic angst and alot of feeling go to mark this Brighton based chap out as a little different from the many other singer songwriters out there."
- Gill Mill - Best of Myspace podcast BBC.
Luke Sital Singh was
brought up in the small
South West London town
of New Malden, birthplace
of folk legend John
Martyn. As the youngest
in his family, Luke left
himself open to the influence of his family. Matt, his eldest brother was the first to
have a musical influence on Luke’s life. “I remember him having so much music and
playing it all the time!” Luke’s parents encouraged their sons to take up musical
instruments. Piano, saxophone, guitar and the flute were all part of the Sital Singh
ensemble with Luke taking up the violin at age 11. However, Luke soon grew out of
love with the violin and since picking up his brother’s guitar a few years later he has
never looked back.
Luke passed through the typical ‘teenage angst’ phase quite quickly, thanks in large
part to the discovery of Damien Rice. Swapping his electric guitar for an acoustic one
Luke began to write songs reminiscent of Rice and other early influences. “I was
rubbish, either completely ripping off Damien Rice or the Goo Goo Dolls!” Writing
became a way for Luke to sort through his thoughts and express things that were
never spoken. The more he wrote the better and more unique the songs became.
Luke has been in and out of various bands for years, each one never really finding it’s
stride. Not that this has had a negative affect on Luke’s attitude, “I feel each project
has given me different tools, viewpoints, or ingredients if you will. Anything can
influence you and leave its mark. I see bits from each band in the stuff I’m doing
now.”
Now with significant influences ranging from Switchfoot, Elbow and The Shins all
the way to Ryan Adams, Bright Eyes and Sufjan Stevens, Luke Sital Singh could be
compared to a warm bowl of soup; Creamy melodic storytelling with a few crunchy
croutons to surprise and delight.
