BADFINGER was a rock/pop band formed in Swansea, Wales in the early 1960s. Originally called THE IVEYS, they became the true initiator of the "Power-Pop" genre which started following the British Merseybeat onslaught of the early/mid 60s, converging to Psych-Pop, and then emptying into the Blues-oriented revival at the tail-end of the decade. In 1970, it was Badfinger who revived harmonious melodic rock with a decisive new crunch through their single release of "No Matter What." The song was universally accepted into the mainstream and became a worldwide smash. "Come And Get It" had been their precursor hit, but despite its quality, Paul McCartney's hand in writing the song had lessened their credibility somewhat. But with their ensuing 45s "Day After Day" and "Baby Blue", in addition to the Global Number One hit Ham/Evans composition "Without You," as covered by Harry Nilsson, this had cemented the group as projected up-and-coming superstars.
Throughout the early 1970s the band had been touted at times as the heir apparent to The Beatles, partly because of their close working relationships with the 'Fab Four' on various projects, but also because of their somewhat similar sound. However, it was the meteoric rise and harrowing demise of Badfinger that cemented their name in rock history journals. Although poised to make an impact on the music scene of the 1970s, starting it out with four hit singles and a number-one Billboard composition, Badfinger became victim to the worst elements of the music industry and internal strife; this resulted in bankruptcy and two suicides. Somewhere deep beyond the stars and their never ending reflections of their peaceful shining light, lies a dream within our vision that still remains hidden and still nowhere to be found within our own ever reaching sight.
A world where we are looked upon as a discovery still yet to be found, where they endlessly listen into the darkness of space while hoping to hear any and every little sound.
As they're looking in our direction just wondering what and how they're suppose to feel, what if they do find us, will they find us quite pleasing, or anything but what they had dreamed as being real....
How could both ends of a spectrum come together with out knowing the reasons for one an others quest for traveling across so many endless miles, how would we prove to one another that any form of friendship would have to first begin by passively exchanging what we like to call friendly smiles....
Would we welcome one another as a wonderful new friend, or would we look around at our own world and then try our best to just smile and somehow make pretend….
My sincere thanks to you guys for all the years of inspiration.
I so wish you were still here to influence all of us, though I think you're contributions to music still stand proudly.
Your work has given me a benchmark to measure my own against, though different, I try to capture some of the essence, while adding a sort of tribal beat.
Anyway, I want to wish your family, friends and all those who've been touched by the majesty of Badfinger the best in all things and I hope that somewhere Pete and Tom are making the afterworld a better place -Sheriden
