Magic Mirror is indicated to provide accompaniment to solitary drinking between the hours of 2 and 6 A.M. Use As Directed.
Magic Mirror make music to be listened to late in the evening, when such music is truly necessary. Songwriter Matthew Lindgren left Los Angeles to live in Spain for five years to gather inspiration from the bottoms of absinthe bottles, and returned with a collection of songs (recorded with help from friends in The Warlocks and The Brian Jonestown Massacre) variously described as “Spiritualized with Spanish guitars,” “Leonard Cohen fronting the Bad Seeds”, “Elvis, but only Elvis at Sun”, “The resurrection of Cash”, or “Breakup songs for brokedown people.” Magic Mirror strongly encourages you to listen for yourself.
Fervent and romantic believers in the power of throbbing vintage organ seeping through reverb soaked guitars and haunted vocal harmonies delivering a beautiful, though bitter sermon, Magic Mirror offer songs to touch nerves in new ways and to help those who need help in the dark.
Despite having only recently solidified as a live band based in Los Angeles, Magic Mirror has played concerts in Europe and toured with the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and played with Dead Meadow, Spindrift, and The Lilys in the United States.
The debut album, Champagne and Hostages, will be released in the spring of 2008, label to be determined.
L.A. Record Magazine: “Magic Mirror left me with bruised lips and hips. This is pretty freaky rock-n-roll with dry, wry lyrics like Cohen and Cave. The voice of singer/guitar player Matt Lindgren brought to mind a young Shane MacGowan or Ray Davies. Fresh off a few recent opening dates for Black Rebel Motorcycle club, Magic Mirror is one to reflect on. (ZZ)”
Classical Geek Theatre: "I stuck it out late on a hunch that the good things I'd heard about Magic Mirror were not without merit. Suspicion confirmed. To borrow an observation from Buzz Bands: I heard five songs before leaving and not a single one sounded anything like the last. They flirted with all kinds of old-timey music, squeezed and mutilated with distortion and grime. Reminded me of a less bitter Nick Cave.
Here's a thinking man's rock band. My fear is that with no obvious hooks or gimmicks, they could get lost in a sea of substantially less interesting, less talented bands. I suppose that fear comes from knowing that having to "uncover" a band like Magic Mirror challenges the notion that all the cream has risen to the top."
Tucson Weekly: "Champagne And Hostages No. 5 In Top Ten Albums of 2008"
Hey friends. Come to our badass Masquerade Party! great music, tons of fun, and free beer & wine (if you tip the bartenders). Saturday OCTOBER 24th @ The Unknown Theater.
Thanks for the add. Evil Country is a great song. We found out about your band from Tommy your bass player, he is my neighbor in Echo Park, I will try and catch your show 6/24 - best of luck, Steve Tarnoff from Oyster Club.
"Also
hugely enjoyable, highly original AND psychically useful is the music
of Australian duo The Scrapes, whose fiery epic guitar and abandoned
Mithraic fiddle pieces evoke images of lost Keltic lands inundated by
the oceans, lost Iberian & Armorican sea peoples and lost times
from beyond the beyond." Julian Cope
