Español: Mägo de Oz es un grupo español de
música heavy metal con influencia celta formado en mayo
de 1989 por el batería Txus. El nombre resulta de
añadir el llamado umlaut del heavy metal a "El Mago de
Oz", novela infantil del estadounidense Lyman Frank Baum.
La banda se fundó en mayo de
1989 por Txus, quien poco a poco fue reclutando al resto de los
miembros de la banda, hasta lograr una primera formación
estable que duraría desde 1992 hasta 1995.

componentes fueron:

Mohamed: violín.
Charlie: guitarra solista.
Chema: guitarra.
Salva: bajo.
Juanma: voz.
Grabaron varias maquetas: "Y
qué más Da" (1989), "Canción de Cuna para
un Bohemio", y una tercera maqueta en 1992. Su música
estaba abierta a gran cantidad de estilos e influencias, pero
basando todo su potencial musical en el folk rock y la
música celta, consiguiendo un estilo original, como
demuestran las críticas recibidas en prensa y medios
especializados.
En 1992 el grupo fue finalista en el
Concurso Villa de Madrid, pero Chema, el guitarrista
decidió dejar el grupo. En su lugar entró
Carlitos. Tras dos grabaciones y la expulsión de Charlie
y la reentrada de Chema en su lugar, lanzaron su primer CD en
1994, producido por Txus y Alberto Plaza bajo el nombre de
"Mägo de Oz". Este disco tuvo escaso éxito y apenas
dio a conocer al grupo. En ese momento Mägo de Oz tuvo una
de sus épocas más difíciles con el
abandono (ya definitivo) de Chema y Juanma. En 1996 se
formó la composición que ha perdurado casi hasta
la actualidad. Entra José en sustitución de
Juanma, y Frank en sustitución de Chema.

El mismo año, empezaron a
grabar el CD "Jesús de Chamberí", producido por
Alberto Plaza y Mägo de Oz. El CD fue editado en 1996 con
el sello discográfico Locomotive Music.
La gira que apoyó este segundo
disco tomó el nombre de "Via Crucis Tour" y obtuvo gran
éxito en todo el país. En 1997 decidieron volver
a grabar cinco temas de lo que fue su primer disco con una
mejora notable de sonido y con los dos nuevos componentes (Jose
y Frank), producción esta vez realizada por G. Sider.
Mención especial hay que hacer a la presentación
del disco en la Sala Canciller de Madrid. Este disco le
abrió las puertas de importantes festivales y tuvo mayor
éxito que Jesús de Chamberí.
Fieles al estilo de Opera Rock, y esta
vez ambientado en los paisajes y la temática de la
inmortal obra de Miguel de Cervantes, El Quijote, nace su
tercer CD "La Leyenda de la Mancha"(1998). Este es un disco
repleto de riffs de guitarra, melodías celtas, canciones
y una cuidada producción.
La gira de este disco llamada "The
Riiiichal Tour" tiene varios puntos álgidos, el primero
en La Riviera (sala de conciertos de Madrid). La gira de este
disco es la más extensa que Mägo de Oz haya tenido
nunca (115 conciertos).
Tras el éxito de La Leyenda de
La Mancha y con motivo del 10º aniversario de su
fundación, deciden sacar un home-video que recogiera la
trayectoria del grupo. Este fue Resacosix en Hispania.
A finales de 1999 decidieron
embarcarse en un ambicioso proyecto: un disco doble. Este fue
su cuarto LP y se llamó Finisterra. Para este disco se
incorporaron al grupo Sergio "Kiskilla" a los teclados y
Fernando a los vientos. Este disco ha sido el más folk
del grupo, aunque sin perder bases heavy. La gira de este disco
también fue muy ambiciosa, con luces, pirotécnia
e hinchables. Decidieron sacar un disco con temas en directo,
que recogiera la gira; este disco fue Fölktergeist, y con
motivo de este nuevo disco se embarcaron en otra gira mucho
más ambiciosa (más pirotecnia, mejor
escenografía) y que grabaron en DVD. Es en este momento
cuando Salva decidió abandonar el grupo
sustituyéndole un joven bajista: Sergio.
En 2003 se embarcan en el proyecto de
realizar tres álbumes que compondrán la
trilogía de Gaia: el primero con título "Gaia",
que fue lanzado ese mismo año al mercado. Con la
temática de Cortés y la conquista de los
españoles a los aztecas, de este disco se desprendieron
los sencillos "La Costa del Silencio" y "La Rosa de los
Vientos". Mägo de Oz ha realizado varios conciertos en
Sudamérica. Sin embargo, este disco no gustó a
muchos de sus fans, pues relegaba a las guitarras y tiraba
más al Hard Rock que al Heavy Metal.
Para el 2004, la banda regresa al
estudio a grabar lo que sería su sexta placa
discográfica: "Belfast", en honor a la ciudad irlandesa
del mismo nombre, pues ha sido lugar de conflictos religiosos.
Este disco, lanzado después de "Gaia" pero antes del
verdadero sucesor del mencionado, es una recopilación de
algunos temas de producciones anteriores; por ejemplo, Alma
(del disco "Gaia") tiene arreglos orquestales, se incluye,
además, una versión metal de "La Rosa de Los
Vientos", entre otras. También estuvo a cargo de
Locomotive Music.
En este momento se producen
importantes cambios en Mägo de Oz: entra un tercer
guitarrista: Jorge Salán, y meses depués sale
Sergio, el bajista.
En el año 2005 salieron dos discos de Mägo
de Oz. El primero fue Madrid - Las Ventas, disco grabado en
directo en la plaza de toros madrileña de Las Ventas;
fue un disco con mucha polémica ya que lo publicó
Locomotive Music sin tener en cuenta al grupo, que entonces ya
había sido contratado por otra discográfica. El
segundo disco, puesto a la venta el 14 de Noviembre de 2005,
fue Gaia II - La Voz Dormida, editado ya con su nueva
discográfica Dro Atlantic; este disco es la segunda
parte de la trilogía "Gaia" y su primer single fue "La
Posada de los Muertos". Para Gaia II entró en el grupo
un nuevo bajista llamado Pedro (Peri).
English: MAGO DE OZ is one of the most popular original bands
from Madrid. Their creative and distinctive blend of Heavy
Metal and Celtic styles, plus dynamic in-your-face
performances, have won them acclaim from both fans and press.
Playing to sold-out audiences throughout Spain and South
America, they are consistently found on the Top 10 Charts.
Their latest album 'Finis Terra',
released May 2000, went GOLD before the year ended. Musically,
MAGO DE OZ manage to offer all to the best. 'Finis Terra"
starts off with an interesting bagpipe and flute intro,
followed by "Satania" kick-starting the album with thundering
double-bass and solo-violin, and the electric guitars giving
you the Power Metal you desire. The title song, 'Finisterra'
has all the creative guns blazing during 16 minutes of acoustic
guitars, piano, violin, flute, and even an accordion.
Drummer Txus formed MAGO DE OZ in the
mid 80's. The band's early popularity was apparent as they made
the 1992 finals of the "Villa de Madrid" Rock Contest. They
released their first album in 1994, 'Mago de Oz', produced by
Txus and Alberto Plaza. The band toured Spain, and earned the
title "Best New Rock Band of 1995".

After their successful tour, the band
started recording their second album. The Rock Opera "Jesus de
Chamberi", produced by Alberto Plaza and Mago de Oz, was
released in 1996 by their current label, Locomotive Music. This
was followed by another tour throughout Spain, playing to
sold-out audiences.
MAGO DE OZ returned to the studio in
1997 to revisit their first album. Produced by G. Sider, the
result is a more polished sound. Their third tour included an
appearance at the Sala Canciller in Madrid, playing to a packed
audience. Due to popular demand, this album was re-released in
its re-mastered format in 1999.
Their third album, "La Leyenda de la
Mancha", was released in 1998. Influenced by Cervantes'
Quixote, this innovative album showcases powerful guitar riffs,
Celtic melodies of bagpipes, flute and violin, and a great
production.
The promotional tour for this album,
"Riiiichaal!' was MAGO DE OZ's largest. This included a
sold-out performance of 3,000 at the La Riviera concert hall
where hundreds of fans were left outside unable to enter. They
then played for a crowd of 25,000 at the Vina Rock Festival.
During 1999, the band played more than 115 performances,
earning them the title of "hardest working Spanish band".
MAGO DE OZ continues to set the pace
for the popular resurgence of Spanish Heavy Metal. They have
proudly represented Spain at the Eurometal Festival, playing
with bands such as GAMMA RAY, STRATOVARIOUS, and ANGRA.

The tour of this album ..La Leyenda de
la Mancha´ finished in Zaragoza (Columbus Day), closing
their longest tour, with more than 120 shows in this year and
showing that they are the Spanish band, inside all musical
styles, that has worked more in the last year.

MÄGO DE OZ has opened the way to the conceptual albums,
also called Opera Rock, in this decade:
What will be the new MÄGO DE OZ
album about
2000, May 19th was released the new
album called ..Finis Terra´. This is a double album,
recorded in studio, with 20 tracks, that is about a story of a
travelling going across the Camino de Santiago, but it's seen
under a man in the future point of view that finds a CDROM in
the year 2199 in which a lot of adventures are told about this
travelling that goes across the camino in the XVII century.
..Finis Terra´ has been 8
consecutive weeks in the AFIVE lists around the number 20 of
the list. And their single Fiesta Pagana entered directly in
the number 16 of the sales AFIVE list. A single of a Spanish
Rock band was in this list for ages.
Later, the band had a
re-entry in which stayed more than 20 weeks.
Their video Fiesta Pagana has been
played in all national and local Spanish radio stations also in
the musical channels via satellite.
A lot of shows during the whole year,
emphasizing Rock Machina Festival celebrated in July in
Castellón, where they were headliner, playing with
international famous bands like METALIUM, RUNNING WILD, VIRGIN
STEEL, EDGUY, AT VANCE, LABYRINTH...
In October 2000, they released a new
single El Que Quiera Entender... Que Entienda. It was the first
time that a rock band in Spain faces up the homosexuality in
their lyrics. Also it..s included a completely cover version of
the song Dust In The Wind (KANSAS), that in a magisterial way
was adapted to Spanish. Moreover this single (as a present), it
was included a new video clip where they tell about their new
projects with some images from the tour Santiago y Vuelva
España Tour. This single raised the number 5 in the
single AFYVE lists.
Their tireless tour will go on during
two years and is going through Spain, filling big venues, the
most of the times of more than 2000 people.
Also MÄGO DE
OZ is doing their first inclusions in new countries where they
begin to be known their adventures and where they have got an
amazing and big success, it's Mexico case (with two tours),
Venezuela, Portugal, Germany (Festivals like Wacken Open Air
2001 and Bang Your Head 2002).
MÄGO DE OZ exhausting sucsess
with ..Finis Terra´ has got platinum disc in Spain. To
support this event, they released a new single La Danza del
Fuego, joined to a comic of the band and with a cover version
of Man On The Silver Mountain (RAINBOW) singed a duet with the
German female vocalist Doro (ex WARLOCK).
MÄGO DE OZ has recorded a big
part of their shows of their last tour, which will be the songs
that will be included in their double new album called
..Fölktergeist´, to be released soon, where they will
collect their best songs and where it..s also recorded the
devoted audience that go with them. With this new album,
MÄGO DE OZ will do a 5 months tour that well carry them
all over the world.
