About Marcus Rubio and the Gospel Choir of Pillows
Marcus Rubio is the name of Marcus Rubio who leads this project in all of it's various directions. He is a music composition major at Trinity University and often tries to write tone clustered polyrhythmic arrangments like Krzysztof Penderecki or Terry Riley but it often comes out sounding a lot like "Off The Wall" by Michael Jackson-not that he has a problem with this of course. Marcus recently completed work on his 4th recorded project Oceanic Tremors- a conceptual pop song cycle that focuses largely on the subjects of whales, technology, fear, and most importantly LOVE. The Gospel Choir of Pillows refers to the cast of musicians who frequently back Marcus at his live performances. The band's lineup fluctuates at whim and has run the gamut from being a chamber ensemble, an experimental synth heavy group, and a straight up rock band. However, the current lineup of a string trio (which morphs into a quartet when Rubio plays violin) and rhythm section with the occasional bass clarinet has been the most consistent and satisfying one and looks like it will stay for what will hopefully be a long time Marcus(who is referring to himself in the 3rd person) is currently actively involved in Moth!Fight!, The Cartographers, and occasionally Druggist. He loves the music-and beatz. If you would like to purchase a copy of Oceanic Tremors (or the Life of Pillows) they can now be found at Music Town(AKA most awesome place ever) in SA and Waterloo Records in Austin.
