  • Bio

I write songs, sing, play guitar, mandolin, bass and try to be good. Noel Mengel of Brisbane’s Courier Mail once said I was one of the best songwriters in Australia. I'll take the compliment. In November of 2008 I released House of Cards a full length release coproduced with guitar maestro Michael Fix and my good mate Richard Evans. As well as Michael & Richard on guitars, the cd also features Silas Palmer on fiddle and keys, The Flood's Scott Hills on drums, Tulca Mor's Andrew Heath on bass and my son Joe on pedal steel & dobro. There are 4 songs from that cd on the myspace. In 2005 I recorded Notches on the Wall. Queen of the Great Below and Man of No Good Fortune are from that cd. Some time back, I used to play with the band Spot the Dog. That band recorded 3 succesful cd’s Bedside Manners, Drunk on the Moon and Brand New Juliet. We still play together occasionally and I am backed regularly by some alumni of that band who have been dubbed, for the purposes of the exercise, The Redeemers – nothing profoundly religious, I just figure that they are there to redeem the situation. For fun and a little profit Richard Evans, Dan Grant and a floating cast of others including Spot the Dog alumni Silas Palmer and Cathy Bell play in The Full Quid - an outfit in which we get to play some of our favourite songs and maybe a few of yours too. The Full Quid gigs are noted as such in the gig guide. They are usually a hoot. Between Richard and Dan and yours truly (but mainly Richard and Dan) we know hundreds of songs - so you never know exactly what we'll play next (Nor do we half the time!!)

The Redeemers, who usually play with me, include variously: Richard Evans - guitar, harmonica, vocals; Cathy Bell - fiddle, accordion, vocals; Andrew Heath - bass guitar; Silas Palmer - keys, fiddle, vocals. The Full Quid is typically Richard Evans; Dan Grant - guitar, bass, drums, vocals; myself and either Silas Palmer or Cathy Bell. Occasionally we may use others including a drummer. It just depends on the gig and who is available.
  • Influences

Amongst my influences and faves are, in no particular order: – Paul Kelly, John Hiatt, Shawn Colvin, The Band, Neil Finn, Dylan, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Jackson Browne, Buddy & Julie Miller, Mick Thomas, Bill Monroe, Lindisfarne, Steve Earle, Elvis Costello, Paul Brady, Patty Griffin, Slaid Cleaves, Gillian Welch, John Gorka, Shane Howard, Lucinda Williams and lots of others too.

Hey Mark. Thanks for adding me. It looks like you're going to be really busy for awhile - that's great! Silken Thomas is playing at the Redlands Spring Fair as well on the weekend, but we aren't playing until Sunday - 10:00 am!! Then I'm holding a penny whistle workshop at 2. I wish we could get in to hear you on Friday, but we've got an early start on Saturday morning, then a gig Saturday arvo.
We'll catch you before Christmas, I hope!!! Have a great gig! Regards, Robin
