I am blessed. I play music with world-class musicians in a range of jazz styles, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, Straight Ahead and more. It is my dream come true! After a successful career as a trombonist and a Ph.D in Philosophy. I started playing the flute in my mid-thirties. I began recording seriously in the 1990's and am just finishing my 17th CD on flute. I play concert, alto and bass flutes. I see myself as following the path that Herbie Mann took, playing flute and nothing but flute, with the greatest musicians and playing music of the world.
My most recent release on Jazzheads, Lua e Sol (2008) with Romero Lubambo, guitar, Nilson Matta, bass and Cyro Baptista, percussion was on the radio play charts for weeks as was Straight, No Chaser (2008) with Dave Stryker, guitar, Ed Howard, bass and Victor Lewis drums. Con Alma (2007) was on the charts 26 months, hit 1 on the JazzWeek World Music Chart and 2 on the Jazz Chart. My next album to be released early in 2010, Timbasa, was co-produced by master percussionist Pedrito Martinez and a group of super-hot Cuban musicians, featuring a phenomenal young pianist Alex (Tosca) Laugart.
My latest release, on Ota records, scheduled for October 2009, "Tales From the Earth' with Omar Sosa is based on African forms and includes musicians from Ivory Coast and Benin. Already recorded and scheduled for release on Jazzheads in 2010 is a recording of Brazilian jazz with piano master Kenny Barron, Nilson Matta and drummer Marcello Pellittieri. I am currently finishing an album with Argentinian bassist Pablo Aslan and three other masters of the tango and Cuban pianist Aruan Ortiz who composed the string arrangements for classic and original danzones.
