BIO
A voice and a guitar. That is the basic constellation which is as firmly fixed in the history of popular music as the Lord’s Prayer is in Mass. From Howlin‘ Wolf to Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan to Johnny Cash, Tracy Chapman to Jack Johnson – they all moved the world with their poetry turned song, profoundly touching millions of people. Even Bob Marley once delivered an awe-inspiring and breathtaking acoustic version of his “Redemption Song“. This song definitely has to be mentioned here, because Jondo had his first success in Reggae. Now, the barely 30-year-old singer and guitarist is releasing “Pure”, an acoustic album where he uses his haunting voice and his acoustic guitar to place Reggae music entirely at the service of an idiosyncratic singer-songwriter album. Truth be told, it really is an exceptional work. Jondo presents ten songs that are equally simple and dynamic, producing a powerful authenticity and spiritual field of force that will not only attract Reggae fans. Especially considering the fact that songs like “Little Closer“, “Jah Children“ and “Good Girl“ display affinities to blues, soul, folk, at times even to pop. “Pure“ shows a matured musician returning to his own roots. A portrait of the artist as a young underdog.
Martin Jondo Sprung, who was raised in Berlin as the son of a German father and a South-Korean mother, released his first own song, “Der Rebell“, as early as 2001, on the sampler “Elemental Riddim”. One year later, in the wake of the success of Gentleman, Germany’s biggest Reggae star, he used the opportunity to play live in front of a large audience. Jondo had initially been signed on as a tour merchandiser, but Jondo used cameo appearances during the “Journey To Jah“ tour to show what he had in store. He went on to contribute numerous songs for various Reggae samplers, as well as recording with artists such as Silly Walks, Culcha Candela and Mellow Mark. It did not take long until the German Reggae scene became aware of the unusual talent of Martin Jondo. Reggae magazine Riddim even crowned him best Newcomer of the Year 2004 although his first EP was not released until 2005. “Rainbow Warrior”, the EP, presented songs ranging from classic Roots Reggae via experimental dub to pure acoustic sounds. It was produced by Kraans de Lutin, who then proceeded to work on Martin Jondo’s debut album, “Echo & Smoke“, released in 2006. A selection of songs off this debut featured on the score of “Goldene Zeiten”, a comedy by Peter Torwarth, set in the Rhur Valley area known for its coal pits. One of Jondo’s most popular tracks, “Jah Gringo“, gave a further EP its name.
Meanwhile, Martin Jondo and his band, the Ruffcats, had become a popular live act – alongside the Chiemgau Reggae Summer and the Summerjam, in 2007 they also featured as special guests on Gentleman’s “Another Intensity“ tour. In spite of the fact that they had established a name and were increasingly successful, Jondo decided to separate from his band in early 2008 in order to focus more on himself and his solo projects.
The album “Pure“ shows Jondo casting a glance back at his adolescence. In those days, he used to play his songs all by himself, in perfect solitude. Today, these songs make up the greater part of an album that also reflects the early maturity of its composer. It was one song more than anything else that inspired his interest in Reggae and the whole lifestyle it implies: “Under Mi Sleng Teng“ by Wayne Smith. Back then, in his youth, he had roamed the woods of Berlin with his friends; they had built their own percussion instruments, and Jondo had increasingly resorted to his guitar. Much as he was fascinated by the Rastafari faith, he also took a keen interest in the deeds and writings of Ghandi and Che Guevara, in the Bible and Koran, in Sufism and the Bhagavad Gita. “At the end of the day, I believe there is some good in every person”, explains Jondo, who in many aspects sees himself as an autodidact. The rebellious fire of his adolescence may not be burning as brightly anymore, but in the meantime his experiences have thoroughly broadened his horizon and now Jondo can look to the future with a clear gaze. He knows that communication is the most important tool for reaching people. Whether his topics be false friends (“Corrupted Minds“) or drug addiction (“Good Girl“), or whether he discusses the emotional misery of immigrants (“Stranger In This Land“) or existential loneliness (“Ten Million Miles“) – Jondo’s songs exude a gentleness and kindliness that certainly deserve both attention and admiration. This is not a notorious do-gooder getting at us; this is a person who has extracted his individual solution from the most varied schools of thought, a person who uses his intimate and heart-rending songs to give his Reggae music an excellent depth of focus and fresh contours. Come a little closer and listen up!
