After several solid albums of acclaimed releases these Bostonian gents crank out tunes equally suited for break-up mix tapes or a dance floor throwdown. M&D just recorded an EP's worth of propulsive dance music with lots of breathy singing, ravesploitation synths, and live drums. See why they calls themselves a band when they open for Kompakt's the Field at Great Scott. Boston Phoenix Matters & Dunaway are up to their necks in electronica, but is a very good kind of electronica that brings to mind M83 at times. Sweeping arrangements make songs such as "RNA" soar without sounding too over-produced. Meanwhile, "Memorial" features a darker mood along the lines of The Cure or Moby. Pop Matters Matters and Dunaway truly distinguish themselves from the bulk of the electronic acts that have purists so squeamish, they are, through and through, a live band. And a very good one at that. The Weekly Dig Vangelis meets the most Eno-esque moments of "The Unforgettable Fire". Grooves Multi-instrumentalists Thomas Gallagher and Andre Obin, have taken their heavy, dream-state electronica and pushed it further into well developed, cinematic themes. From passive 80s new wave - the perfect backdrop for a John Hughes remake - to sci-fi chase scenes and futuristic robot battles.
