hey there...i'm a singer songwriter guitarist from melbourne australia...songs from my new cd 'in the breeze' and photo videos are up and ready to listen to and look at...let me know what you think!
I'm sorry... my first post got cut off due to length. Thanks for telling me, MySpace! :(
(continued)
From Living Things (2002): 21. Push the Feelings, 22. In My Tree (with a slow fade starting at 3:43. I would have included The Big Cats of Shambala in place of Your Sweet Voice, if only I could have muted that steel drum! But the steel drum absolutely kills the song for me.)
From In Reverse (1999): 23. What Matters
From Time Capsule: The Best of Matthew Sweet 90/99: 24. So Far
And then concluding with the bonus track Sayanara from Kimi ga Suki - Raifu. If I had recorded this in date order, this would have been an even better closer.
I guess Flying isn't that terrible on the second listen. I have the bass on my computer speakers turned down so the subwoofer doesn't wake anyone in the neighboring bedroom at 2am. There are some nice background vocals in that song and it's not all that hectic. Maybe it's just the aggressive/stoned-sounding lead vocal I don't much care for. I still don't like Room to Rock though, but I think I will reserve my official judgment until after I am in possession of the CD and listen to it in the car and at work three times. :) I suppose I should just trust his judgment. It's going to be difficult to top Kimi ga Suki - Raifu though! I think that's the gold standard that all future Matthew Sweet releases will be compared to, with Wait being my all-time favorite track. That song brings tears to my eyes almost every damn time I listen to it! But then I rediscovered Blue Sky on Mars and think that is a very close second.
Yikes! I just listened to Flying and Room to Rock and thought to myself, "I think I am going to skip this new album. This is not the Matthew Sweet that I know and love." But then I heard Byrdgirl and I was back in line on release day! :)
Not sure what the deal is with the chaotic new tracks though or how Flying could be anyone's new favorite Matthew Sweet track. I like harmonized vocals and killer hooks, both of which seem to be missing from those tracks. You just don't get that from most of today's artists, so I remain hopeful that the best is yet to come. However, I think I may sample clips from the new album online before I make my purchase, because I've been burned many times before with other bands and really don't have much money to spare these days.
Last weekend, I FINALLY put together an 80-minute, Matthew Sweet Greatest Hits compilation CD of 25 songs culled from all of my favorite songs from all of his CDs, leaving out most of the slower ballads that I also love, since he's got too many excellent songs and because I wanted a mostly groovin' compilation CD to crank up in the car this summer and to influence young minds to become Matthew Sweet fans. Here's the tracklisting, in case anyone cares, though I may redo this in date order eventually:
From 100% Fun (1995): 1. Sick of Myself, 2. Come to Love, 3. We're the Same, 4. Walk Out, 5. Get Older
From Kimi ga Suki - Raifu (2003): 6. Wait, 7. The Ocean In-between, 8. Morning Song, 9. I Don't Want to Know, 10. Warning
From Blue Sky on Mars (1997, adjusted to not cut off the first half second of every song): 11. Back to You, 12. Behind the Smile, 13. Over It, 14. Heaven and Earth, 15. All Over My Head
From Girlfriend (1991): 16. I've Been Waiting, 17. Evangeline, 18. Looking at the Sun, 19. I Wanted to Tell You, 20. Your Sweet Voice
From Living Things (2002): 21. Push the Feelings, 22. In My Tree (with a slow fade starting at
I know I've already commented once but, DAMN! I can NOT get enough of these tracks. Flying is already among my favorite tracks Matthew has made. PRICELESS rock! Roll on August!
Me and my bass player/hunny Chris saw you play one of the very last shows ever at the BOTTOM LINE in NYC when you had just released IN REVERSE. You blew me away so fucking much that you renewed my entire sense of faith in pursuing (and loving!!) music.
I am listening to that album tonite and remembering this and LOVING YOU MAN!!!
Cheers friend, an honour having you here, be well, and do enjoy the library/blog's contents, here's hoping that it'll inspire you, as your creative spirit has inspired mine, sweet dreams then...
