From the day he was born Matt always knew we wanted to be around music. At 3 years old he sat for hours in front of his family's beat-up record player, listening to his older siblings' various rock and soul records. By the age of 9, he had his own pirate AM radio station, which he helped his father build in the basement of his suburban New Jersey home. At age 16, he was the youngest disc jockey ever to be given his own show on the college radio station at Rutgers University, WRSU. Throughout his college years, Matt continued to do shows with the station and worked as WSRU's music director gaining invaluable knowledge about the industry. While still at WRSU, he began producing records for local New Jersey bands as well as booking bands and DJing at the legendary Melody Club. The Melody spawned such bands as The Smithereens, Thursday and Bouncing Souls. Throughout his 12 year residency, artists from around the world including Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead would come to listen to Matt spin.
In 1984 Matt became music director and program director of WHTG-FM in Asbury Park, NJ, one of the first commercial modern rock stations in the country. It was under Matt's guidance that the station gained its initial notoriety, due in large part to his rock credibility with some of the music greats from the area such as Bruce Springsteen. During his 10 years at WHTG, Matt won the prestigious Gavin Award in 1992 and 1993 for National Commercial Alternative Music Director of the Year. In 1993 Matt started as a fill-in host on MTV; very shortly after he was hired to be a Manager of Music Programming. In 1995, he became the permanent host of the influential MTV show "120 MINUTES". Within a year, he became a staple on MTV, hosting a variety of shows-including "Mattrock","Pinfield Suite","Pinfield Presents", "Rocks Off", "Say What","MTV Live" and well over 100 various specials. His reputation as a venerable walking encyclopedia of music knowledge made the "Stump Matt" segments on TRL a regular feature. Matt was also the first VJ brought in to host music hours on MTV2, and helped position and develop the channel in its infancy.
At the end of 1999 Matt left his illustrious position at MTV, and became the host and co-writer of the live music TV show "Farm Club.com" for Universal Television in Hollywood, which premiered in January of 2000 on the USA network. The show was the 3rd highest rated with the male 12-24 demographic on cable in its first year. It featured interviews and live performances with everyone from Eminem and Dr.Dre, Destiny's Child to Limp Bizkit and U2. When the show ended in late 2001, Matt was courted by then Columbia records head, Donnie Ienner. He accepted a position as a Senior Director of A & R and Artist Development for Columbia Records and moved back to New york City.
Over the course of the last 15 years Matt has hosted many world premiere record debuts for SFX, Premiere, Infinity and Clear Channel with bands such as The Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews Band, Coldplay, U2 just to name a few. He has been a guest host several times on Rockline, the longest running syndicated Rock radio show. Matt also hosted "The Buzz", a Sunday night new music show on K-ROCK for nine years and still guest hosts for MTV on specials like "25 LOUD" where he was joined by Jack Black, Jimmy Kimmel and Adam Corrola. In addition to hosting, Matt co-authored a book for Rolling Stone Magazine called "Rolling Stone Raves" and has been quoted on numerous rock biographies including the best seller "MOON", the biography of WHO drummer Keith Moon. He also wrote the book inside the massive 8 cd box set for QUEEN, "THE CROWN JEWELS". Matt has been a guest on PBS's Charlie Rose, Late Night with Conan O'Brian, Late Show with Craig Kilborn, Live with Regis, The Rosanne Barr Show, and has been interviewed as a music expert on MSNBC, FOX NEWS, and CNN. Matt has received rave reviews in Time, Newsweek, USA Today, TV Guide, Rolling Stone, Spin, the New York Times, Post, Daily News, and Details Magazine for his various contributions to music industry.
Matt contineued to do A&R and Artist Development as a Vice President for Columbia records. His most recent successes include Coheed and Cambria, certified gold by the RIAA and Crossfade who were certified platinum in November 2005. Matt was also invited to Live8 in July 2005 to be an on-site host in London. In September 2005 Matt was picked by the Rolling Stones to host their international radio interview for Premiere networks. The critically acclaimed special featured all 4 band members together for the first time in an interview setting in 35 years.
Fall 2005 saw another new project for Matt in the creation of "Soundoff with Matt Pinfield" featured weekly on HDNet. The program is an in-depth interview program in the vein of "Larry King Live", with top recording artists and luminaries in various genres and eras. Recently taped shows include Kid Rock, John Mayer, Dave Navaro, Alice In Chains and 50 Cent. As if that wasn't enough, Sirius recently commissioned Matt for a weekly radio show aptly-titled "Matt Pinfield Plays What he Wants." The show aired August 2005 and has received nothing but rave reviews from music lovers and aficionados through-out the world.
Matt Pinfield remains one of the most appreciated and recognized personalities in the music and entertainment industry today.
