"With a guttural, barbed-wire, wail and a guitar style crafted from dirt and the sticky mess of a hundred bar room floors, south-east coaster, Matt Southon strangles life into the blues – the death-rattle serving as percussion for his raucous take on a music which sometimes needs to be reminded of its true roots – this is that reminder." SAM FELL: Rhythms/Inpress/Drum Media/Mess+Noise/Australian Guitar/Tsunami
“Matt's 8 track ‘live' EP is interesting and diverse. His considerable song-writing talents are obvious in this debut effort. Very much in the mould of Hat Fitz, his interpretation of the blues is raw with a sound very reminiscent of traditional Delta blues.” Russ Lawrence: President Canberra Blues Society
"The true power of music is when it's stripped of its commercial ties and cross-marketing and simply becomes a raw cry from the soul....Matt is proof" Lloyd Spiegel: One of Oz's preeminent blues guitarists.
What is Matt's music about?
Matt's music is inspired by passion and fire of old style bluesman the likes of Son House and Charlie Patton.
With a beat up slide guitar and a hollering singing style, Matt can't hide the fact that his love of the old blues has combined with a love of harder stuff like the Ramones or the Dead Kennedy's, and modern legends like Jeff Lang, Lloyd Spiegel and Geoff Achison; resulting in a 100 mile an hour crash or crash through performance style.
Living on a bush property near Bega, Matt's verandah has played home to much of his raucous stomping about, with his style developing through absolutely no need to turn it down!
Festivals?
Matt has performed at the following festivals

CD's Anyone?
Matt has produced two EP's. ‘Stone Cabin Sessions' a six track EP completely recorded in the stone cabin by Matt (and very lo tech); and ‘Hollerin!' which contains eight original tracks and was recorded at Pirate Studios in about seven hours. Both EP's are attempts to capture the energy of Matts live performance style. Matt's new CD "Australian Verandah Blues" is a full length knees up, with songs of murder and drought, burning pumps and beer.
Thanks for you message. Great to hear from you. Things going well here I just found out Im gonna play in Tamworth in the Toyota Starmaker Finals! Very exciting!

"Ticklin' The Strings" by Sweet Hollywaiians
Amazing Japanese hot string band playing 1920's, 30's, 40's style hawaiian, swing, calypso, blues, italian music and originals, featuring vintage instruments.3 songs with Robert Armstrong and Tony Marcus(from Robert Crumb and His Cheap Suit Serenaders)
"The Sweet Hollywaiians have probably the best feel for this 20's music of any string band working today. They manage the rare feat of sounding relaxed even when their playing is hot, are top notch musicians with tasteful arrangements and a full, rich, warm sound.Plus, they have a nice gamut of tunes, from King Nawahi to Giovanni Vicari to Bobby Leecan. See them live, if you can, for an unforgettable experience. If you can't, buy their Cds!" ~ Terry Zwigoff
