My mom introduced me to folk music when I was about 8 years old. Two musicians playing at the Estedford Folk Festival were crashing at our house and using my bedroom. Jan Downey was awake when I took a peek to see who they were. She followed me to the kitchen and introduced herself. She pretty much started it all. She broke out her appalachain dulcimer and sangs some kids tunes from the Ozarks. She was also a member of a Yugoslavic and Bulgaric folk ensemble called Laduvane. I was incredibly inspired. ;-) To the dismay of my sisters who were rushing home to put on their disco hits, I was faster with my skateboard and fixated on my Yugoslavic LP I got as a gift from Jan. You can imagine how crazy my sisters thought I was. They also couldn't stand Yugoslavic music. What 8/9 year old would listen to that dissonance. ;-) I came home one day and couldn't find my LP. hmmm.. Those rats. Luckily I discovered Paul Simon. When living with my father I was introduced to some incredible Christian singers by the likes of Mark Heard and Randy Stonehill. Then I raided my brothers music chest and discovered Yes, The Who, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Cat Stevens, Billy Joel and Harry Chapin. The list goes on and on. I was addicted and basically influenced and inspired by any one who could carry a tune.
Best known for her pancakes, homefries and McSpecials but only to those who have access to her kitchen.
Mckinley Black hails from the cranberry bogs of Middleboro, MA (USA). She is the seventh child of seven children. Her mother immigrated to the United States after the second world war from Madeira, Portugal and her father is French Canadian. Mckinley wrote her first song at the age of 9. She couldn't play an instrument so all her songs were written acapella, until a border who rented a room in her mom's house gave her first guitar.
Mckinley's music digs deep into the heart, finds a truth and expresses it honestlty. She writes powerful songs about weakness and finds simple ways to express hard things. She blends beautiful melodies with an amazing, gifted voice which can only truly be
experienced at her live performances.
Mckinley also created a forum for her colleagues in the form of a free, open-stage Singer/Songwriter Event called Troubadour - Modern Minstrels. Steph Macleod from Scotland won the fourth season. Now onto the Fifth. Have a great summer ;-)!

Hi Mckinley, just coming back from the States, played a few gigs, had a great time. I was thinking of you when we visited Cape Cod. Beautiful. I saw the Portugese cock picture that's painted on the floor at the the port of Provincetown. I hope you're well. Much love,
