On Medusa Stone's third outing the power trio maintain a love of old school rock while polishing its surface anew. With Shaking Hands the band displays maturity and loads it with fine tuned sonic punch. Whereas on their self-titled debut Medusa Stone sounded like a band playing to the past, they now play forward, a voice built on a history of rock and soul. Intentional or not, the album title seems appropriate, a modern rock band taking influences and coalescing into the present - one generation of music lovers shaking hands with their peers. Many songs are love letters and solid nods to the band's love of rock and roll, its spirit and sometimes contested beauty. They name drop Queen on 'Rock and Roll Queen', The Rolling Stones on the funky swagger of 'Same Old Road' and make defense of the genre against Lenny Kravitz's declaration that rock and roll is dead on 'Pills and Pot.' 'Loaded Gun' is ultra seventies, old school AC/DC crossed with Rocks-era Aerosmith on the chorus. There's a psychedelic flavor infrequently on Shaking Hands and the singing and the playing is stronger here, more refined in crafting songs and musical landscape. The bluesy crunch of 'Live Alone' and nervous breakdown approach of 'In This Place Again' work like inexorable bookends, whose driving rhythm works like a corkscrew into the ear. The latter segues into 'H-Jam' a slow, up against the wall jam grinding towards its explosive breakdown. Vocal duties are spread across the band and the diversity is welcomed. Lead singer Justin Fox's high pitched soul is a fine opposite to Dave Morse's guttural drawl, like Paul Stanley to Gene Simmons. Fox has never been stronger than on 'Wait for Me/Excessum', finding restraint and texture in his vocal range. Shaking Hands navigates cleanly between high energy and cooling down. The album could almost be cut in half, like Ben Harper's Both Sides of the Gun – one side energetic, the other side laid back - but variety helps the album cook. Shaking Hands is a long burn, for both late summer nights and cool autumn afternoons. - Brian Tucker - Bootleg Magazine .. ......
