Thousands of songs were submitted, but only twenty were selected for the American Idol Songwriting competition. Mendy Shaw's song, "Stronger," is an impassioned call to persevere, and was chosen by the 2008 American Idol producers as one of the top contenders for the season finale power ballad.
"Stronger" was written by Ohio native Mendy Shaw (with co-writer Jason Phelps from Top 20 bands Pay the Girl and Frickin' A), and was inspired by Shaw's undaunted goal to become a successful songwriter, and the inner fortitude required to do so. The ballad competition is a giant leap toward that goal, as only the very best meet the exacting criteria set by American Idol.
"Stronger" is the first single from Shaw's full-length debut record, due later this year on Toucan Cove/Universal Republic. The record will showcase her years of writing in Nashville and honing her own voice in both classic and progressive country music.
Shaw has collaborated with some of the top artists in country music, including members of Carolina Rain and Yankee Grey, Shane Minor and Jim Reilley. She's also worked with established writers Bruce Gaitsch (Madonna, Peter Cetera, Elton John), Janey Clewer (Sarah Brightman, Olivia Newton-John), and Rachel Thibodeau (Martina McBride).
Shaw's record is largely produced by Bobby Pinson, who has written hits for Toby Keith, Sugarland and Josh Gracin.
