Bio
The Mercury Tree is an experimental progressive rock band from Portland. As of 2011, we are preparing our new full length album Pterodactyls, set for release in March. The band started as a solo project by Ben Spees in 2004. The album Evil Genius appeared in early 2006, featuring an assortment of players. It included vocals from Aubrey Keating. Shortly after this, Ben met local drummer Mike Byrne, who recruited bassist James Crutcher and guitarist Avery Cooper. In summer 2007, we released a self-titled album as The Mercury Tree. In 2008, Mike and James left to start a new instrumental project. We were then joined by two new band members, Liz Kuhn on flute and drums, and Alan Johnson on bass. This lineup appears on our 2010 EP Descent, along with guest drumming by Mike. In April 2010 Liz departed, to be replaced by prog drummer extraordinaire Connor Reilly. -
