BIOGRAPHIE PAR JELLO BIAFRA J’ai entendu parler pour la première fois de Métal Urbain lorsque j’ai vu leur premier single en facing dans un magasin de disques parisien alors que je n’étais, en 1977, qu’un jeune baroudeur hippie. Je n’avais plus de place dans mon sac et n’ai pas pu l’acheter. Mais je me suis demandé comment ça pouvait sonner … Quand je suis retourné chez moi dans le Colorado, j’ai appris que ce même single de Métal Urbain avait fait son chemin jusqu’en Amérique et que mon ami John Greenway (qui plus tard co-écrit “California Über Alles”) en avait déjà un exemplaire. John etait celui de mes amis qui avait les goûts les moins rock et les plus étranges et je me suis dit que je devais écouter ce groupe immédiatement. “Panik” sur la face A était du punk, mais comme aucun groupe punk que nous avions entendu précédemment. J’ai aimé le synthé hurlant et les paroles énervées en français. Je ne pouvais comprendre le français mais ceci détruit complètement l’idée que le français ne pouvait coller au rock. Le français etait maintenant une arme punk ardente. Mais le vrai choc vint de la face B, “Lady Coca Cola”. Ce n’était pas tellement du punk, plutôt une pure attaque sonore. Peut être un peu de Heldon/R. Pinhas, mais plus proche d’une percée de fraise de dentiste sortant en stéréo! Ces mecs n’étaient pas seulement différents, ils étaient fous! Je me demande ce qu’en pensent les fans de Jean Michel Jarre. A San Francisco, j’ai trouvé une courte interview dans le meilleur magazine punk “Search and Destroy”. La traduction de “Panik” etait plus politique, militante voire même effrayante que la plu part des groupes punk de 77. “Pourquoi tu chantes en français?” “Pour que les américains ne comprennent pas”. J’ai aimé l’attitude aussi. D’autres singles sortirent: “Paris Maquis”, “Hystérie Connective”, tous meilleurs que le précèdent. Métal Urbain n’était pas seulement un groupe flirtant avec les limites du punk mais surtout un putain de groupe rock and roll. Affamé, nous attendions l’album, mais il ne vint jamais. Comme de nombreux pionniers du punk, le feu, l’émotion et les conflits ont divisé le groupe peu de temps après. D’autre prirent le relais et ont fait de la France le seul lieu avec une tradition de groupes utilisant les batteries électroniques et groupes de punk-électro. Selon moi, Charles de Goal, Kas Product, Ludwig Von 88, et Bérurier Noir, et même en Amérique Big Black doivent leur existence à Métal Urbain. Imaginez donc ma surprise lorsque 25 ans plus tard je vois une affiche annonçant Métal Urbain jouant dans un petit club de San Francisco appelé le Hemlock. Je suis allé au concert, m’attendant à voir un jeune groupe de pop indé qui avait volé leur nom. Et bien non, ils étaient bien là. Même à ce moment leur musique produisit la confusion au sein du public. V. Vale de Search and Destroy etait là aussi. Nous sommes allés leur faire un “salut” amical pour leur faire comprendre que certaines personnes ici se souvenaient d’eux. Ils retournèrent ensuite au festival South by Southwest à Austin au Texas, avec de superbes nouvelles chansons et un nouveau venu au synthé qui semblait avoir allumé un feu ardent au sein du groupe. Métal Urbain n’a rien à voir avec la nostalgie, c’est un groupe du futur à nouveau. Je suis surpris et honoré qu’ils m’aient demandé de produire leur nouvel album. Métal Urbain a été mon mentor, et non l’inverse. Je savais que nous allions avoir besoin de Matt Kelley derrière la table car il maîtrise le son et a excellé dans la production de la musique électronique et des sons hip hop via son travail avec The Coup, Hieroglyphics, Digital Underground et George Clinton. Les nouvelles chansons sont fantastiques : rien est à jeter et tout autant, voir même meilleur, que les chansons des années 70. Nous nous sommes tous mis d’accord pour que cela ne sonne pas comme leurs vieilles productions. Les temps ont changé, la technologie a évolué et cette musique importe maintenant. Je pense qu’il y a du bon pour les fans de différents horizons musicaux : des vieilles compos de Métal Urbain à Turbonegro ou Ministry. Des Berurier Noir à Atari Teenage Riot. La musique, les sons et l’amitié existant avec ce groupe ont tous été une grande expérience pour moi. Jello Biafra
ENGLISH VERSION: I first knew of Metal Urbain when I saw their first single on display in a record shop in Paris as a traveling teenage hippie in 1977. There was no more room in my backpack so I did not buy it. But I wondered, what could it be...? When I got back home to Colorado, I learned that the very same Metal Urbain single had found its way to America and my friend John Greenway (who later co-wrote "California Über Alles") already had a copy. John had the strangest, most non-rock taste of any of my friends and said I must hear this band immediately. "Panik" on Side A was very angry punk, but not like any punk we’d ever heard before. I loved the screaming synth noises and the pissed-off French lyrics. I could not understand the French, but it completely destroyed the idea that the French could not rock because the language did not fit the music. Now French was a fiery punk weapon. But the real shock was the B-side, "Lady Coca-Cola." It was not really punk, more an attack of pure noise. Maybe a little Heldon/R. Pinhas, but more like being attacked by dentist’s drills coming out of the stereo—wow! These guys weren’t just different, they were insane. I wonder what Jean-Michel Jarre fans thought of this. In San Francisco, I found a short interview in the greatest of all punk ’zines, Search and Destroy. "Panik" translated was more political and militant, even frightening, than most other ’77 punk bands. "Why do you sing in French?" "So the Americans can’t understand us." I liked the attitude too. More singles came: "Paris Maquis", "Hysterie Connective", each one better than the last. Metal Urbain was not just the outer edge of avant-punk, but a great rock and roll band. Hungry, we waited for the album, but it never came. Like many of the great punk pioneers, fire, emotion and conflict blew up the band way too soon. Others picked up the torch and made France the only place in the world with a long tradition of drum-machine and electronic punk-rock bands. As far as I’m concerned, Charles de Goal, Kas Product, Ludwig von 88, and Berurier Noir, and even America’s Big Black owe their very existence to Metal Urbain. So imagine my surprise 25 years later to see Metal Urbain advertised to play a small club in San Francisco called the Hemlock. I went to the show, half-expecting to see some stupid yuppie indie-pop band that had stolen their name. No, it was the real thing. Even now their music confused many people in the crowd. V. Vale from Search and Destroy was there too, so we gave them a friendly "Hello Hello" to let them know there were people who remember. Then they returned to the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas, with great new songs, and a new synth wizard named Jerome who seemed to have lit a fire under the whole band. Metal Urbain was no longer nostalgia, but once again a band of the future. I am surprised and honored they asked me to produce their new album. It seems more like Metal Urbain were my mentors than the other way around. I knew we would need Matt Kelley to engineer since he is great with sounds and a master of electronic and hip-hop sounds in his work with the Coup, Hieroglyphics, Digital Underground, and George Clinton. The new songs are fantastic: no filler, at least as good, if not better than the original 70s classics. We all agreed not to restrict ourselves to make it sound like the old Metal Urbain. Times have changed, technology has grown, and this music matters now. I think there is something good here for fans of many things—from the old Metal Urbain to Turbonegro or Ministry. From Berurier Noir to Atari Teenage Riot. The music, the sounds and the friendship with the band have all been a great experience for me. Jello Biafra
