Singer/Songwriter Mia Sable was born and raised in the southern suburbs of Charlotte, North Carolina. She grew up playing in the scenic woods and streams, and spent her allowance on 2 things: shoes, and cassette tapes from the used music store (Mariah Carey, Paula Abdul, Ace of Base, Patti LaBelle, and the Beach Boys made up the early stash). Sable’s Korean mother, and German/Native American father (who had met in a disco in the 70’s) contributed to her early love of Pop music, recommending for the collection; The Bee Gees, Donna Summer, and jazzy pop songwriters Carole King and Janis Ian.
Sable filled notebooks, meticulously writing out the lyrics to all of her favorite songs, and eventually developed a knack for writing her own poetry in similar form. Between banging out her parts on the school choir’s piano, and falling in love with boys with guitars, Sable learned to play both instruments, and later, to combine them in composing for herself.
Lessons in singing, guitar, piano, dance, and drama brought Sable to Los Angeles to study musical theater at UCLA. In college, Sable became intrigued by the local indie music scene, and drew new inspirations from artists like Rilo Kiley, Regina Spektor, and Rachael Yamagata. She began singing with other bands, interning at 4th Street Recording Studio (a home to some of her favorite recordings from Fiona Apple, No Doubt, and Incubus), and dabbling in a dream of making a solo album.
By 2005, Sable got her first small break when she was introduced to producer Craig Bartock (Heart). Sable and Bartock began recording a 3 song demo, which caught the attention at her internship of producer Jim Wirt (Incubus, Fiona Apple) who then also began to work on songs with her. By June 2006, Sable decided to release their 10 songs as an independent album, Propeller. Propeller brought in several local awards and nominations, including the LA Music Awards “Indie Singer/Songwriter of the Year 2006” for “My Mistake”, and “Alternative Female Vocalist of the Year 2007” for “Secret Code”.
Following up, Sable intended to release an acoustic EP next, but changed her mind during a rehearsal with her band when she found herself moved by the arrangement they had created for the song “Beautiful Dreamer”. Consequently, The Scenic Route EP was released in 2008 with quirky and dreamlike orchestral production from Bartock and Sable, highlighting the maturing depth and introspection of her lyrics.
Over the last couple of years Sable has performed in New York, London, Nashville, Sundance Film Festival in Park City, SXSW in Austin and NXNE in Toronto, at Los Angeles’ songwriter hotbed Hotel Café, and in-store at the Apple Store in Santa Monica. At the end of 2008, she recorded 3 holiday songs for Mia Sable: X-Mas, and began work on her 2nd full length album in New York with Roger Greenawalt (The Pierces, Ben Kweller). Sable is currently finishing up the album with Bartock and Wirt back in Los Angeles for a 2009 release.
