life, happiness, curiosity, people, truth, justice, peace, environmentalism, great musicians ranging from J.S. Bach to Arvo Part, Stravinsky, Tavener, Britten, Canadian composers Linda C. Smith and Michael Rudman; also much indebted to the many students I've taught over the past 19 years...
Awarded the "ORFEO MUSICA" by Tupilak, Sweden, composer, pianist and former Co-Artistic Director of Toronto's CONTACT contemporary music, Michael Gfroerer has been applauded by audiences, critics and musicians. His music frequently deals with the narrative of transformation and social-justice issues, while creating music that is "…highly entertaining." [THE GLOBE AND MAIL: June 2003] Two pieces which accurately represent his work are Fires, for solo cello, which deals with the censorship-with reference to the historic Bonfire of the Vanities-and Pectus Amor, which uses ancient texts of same-sex love. In 2001, his trio Polarities-from the Other Side, for clarinet, piano and percussion was used in Alan Tong's award-winning short film Sleepless. Current projects such as This Island, for marching band and a quartet, address the issues of environmentalism and fair economic practices. He has just completed a chamber opera entitled Eleusis-Greater and Lesser Mysteries. Currently coordinating a Community World Drumming project with youth-at-risk with funding from the Toronto Arts Council. Michael is currently recording a collection of piano pieces for internet premiere with support of Remenyi House of Music, Toronto.

“We are singing songs of praise. We are praying and thanking our ancestors for being with us through this difficult time. We are happy to be going back to our home. It's our home and not a game reserve. We are pleased that the judges too were able to see that we need to be reunited with our ancestors.” (Xukurii, Botswanan Bushman).
