About me:
This is Erin Wiseman-Parkin (26 years old and orginally from Jenison, MI) and DJ Parkin (29 years old and originally from Clarkston, MI), storm spotters for the National Weather Service of Kent County, and storm chasers by choice. We love the unpredictability of Michigan weather, and promote knowledge before naivity. In simple terms, choose not to be an easy victim. We are not "expert" storm chasers or "extreme" chasers (due to not knowing enough to do it safetly), nor do we claim to be. We are learning, CONSTANTLY learning, and always willing to learn and try new things weather related!

We are "licensed" through the National Weather Service of Kent County, Michigan. NOTE: The NWS does NOT promote chasing. They promote Storm Spotting, from a safe, indoor location. My husband and I are storm chasers by choice. We both have our callsigns: Erin's is KD8DLA, and DJ's is KD8EFB.

This is a great place to learn about weather-- especially if you love it, or if you are scared of it. The best way to control your fear is knowledge, and that is what you will get here. We live in Western Michigan... that would be the Lake Michigan side! ;-)

The first thing ANY good weather person does, everyday, other than go to the bathroom, SHOULD BE to check out the forecast from the National Weather Service (NWS). The first thing you should do, to find this page, is go to http://www.noaa.gov/ . NOAA (The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration published by the U.S. Department of Commerce) in a way, is the "Mother" of the NWS... Weird, but the only way I can explain it. After you go to that site, find the box marked "TODAY'S WEATHER" and put in your zip code (ours in Grandville is 49418). From there, it will bring you to YOUR LOCAL NWS BRANCH. Where real, local people are in charge of your local forecasts!

From your local NWS page (as describe above), you will be able to see the "Forecast at a Glance", the "Detailed 7-Day Forecast", the "Hazardous Weather Outlook" (also known as the HWO), the "Current Conditions", "Radar and Satelite Images", the "Detailed Point Forecast" for the city you live in, the "National Digital Forecast Database", and the "Additional Forecasts & Information" box.

By day, I (Erin) am an unsuspecting, unemployed elementary teacher. (Currently looking for a job!) I substitute teach in the meantine, because I love teens and can't stand to not be teaching. I think my students rock, and I can't wait until I have a classroom of my own! Anyone want to start a write-in campaigne??? ;-) My bunnies, husband and I also started a "storm spotter for students" website, where our bunnies are the "Storm Chasers" teaching students about weather-- stormbunnies.tripod.com
