  • Bio

In the year of 2004, Mike Hastings and Solveig Askvik met as neighbours in an old tenement building in the heart of the West End of Glasgow. Solveig was asked to join Mike's band THE PENDULUMS, and the magic had begun. They had many wonderful adventures together with THE PENDULUMS, but alas, all good things must come to an end. In 2005, Solveig left Glasgow to return to her homeland, Norway, for a year, then got very very bored and came back a year later, 2006. Since on her return she found that their magic band had dissolved, her and Mike decided to pick up the pieces they could find in the flat they were now sharing, and also to add bits and pieces of new stuff to give life to a new and wonderful concoction of sound, rythm, beautiful melodies and randomly meaningful words. So far, the most exotic places they have played include an abandoned factory rooftop in the centre of Berlin, The Sidewalk Cafe in New York and The Forest of Ae. At the start of this year(2010), both members of the band also joined legendary psychedelic folk singer Mike Heron and his daughter Georgia. Together they've been playing classic Incredible String Band songs up and down the country and recently supported Robyn Hitchcock on a UK tour. OTHER THINGS WE DO: Mike Hastings spends most of his time blasting tunes on his electric guitar with successful, eclectic and prolific Glasgow folk band TREMBLING BELLS. Solveig Askvik is involved in a few things at the moment. Trying to learn how to play her granddads saw is her main pursuit, but she also sometimes plays her violin in other musical constellations, the most recent long term commitment being Glasgow folk rock band LUCKY LUKE, who are lying idle at the moment (Although LL did just recently release an amazing album, on NY label Mexican Summer.. but not many people know this!) WHAT YOU CAN BUY AND WHERE YOU CAN TRY TO GET IT FROM... -4 track vinyl EP from 2007- 'Mike Hastings feat. Solveig Askvik' (..it is so old that it even carries their full names) Available at the good price of 7 Get it from Luckynumbernine records (http://www.luckynumbernine.co.uk/) or direct from MIKE & SOLVEIG. EP features the song 'Small Horses' which has been used as the soundtrack to a short film for the Insider festival in Aviemore (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRRJJy23G-M) -6 track self released CD from 2009- Available at 5 Features tracks 'To A Clock' and 'Variations', both played on the NYC radio show Spinning on Ayr, hosted by David Garland, in March 2010.
