Michael (Mike) John Garvey is a 30 year old guitarist and composer from a small town near Liverpool called Warrington.
A brief musical history....
In 1994 I found myself travelling between Warrington and Blackburn, the town I'd just left. This was a fairly harsh time for me having moved to a strange new town. I got heavily into the music of Pink Floyd after hearing a friend play 'The Wall' and immediately went out and bought most of their albums including 'Dark Side Of The Moon' and 'The Division Bell', released that year. Something about the music, in particular the fantastic guitar playing of David Gilmour gestated gently in my subconscious.
Whilst back in Blackburn I happened to walk past a small music shop. In the window was a gleaming electric guitar.... At that moment I knew I wanted to be a guitar player!!! I managed to get a Fender Squier Stratocaster for Christmas, though sadly I didn't have the guitar in my possesion for too long.... "Didn't know how to string it, had no amp, didn't know how to play the f*cker!". For a year or so I forgot about guitar playing, believing that I wasn't cut out for it, simply wasn't musical. However I was cought by the guitar playing bug and from the age of 19 onwards had owned a succession of cheap guitars on which I gradualy learned my first chords and basic blues licks, quickly developing into a talented guitarist.
The year 2000 would be a pivotal year for Me. I was now aged 22 and had been playing for a couple of years or so. A new music course - the Access To Music Foundation Course - started at Warrington College. I immediately joined and quickly set up my first band 'Chapter 24' with new friends Mike Hadland and Ian Bennett amongst others. Whilst the band didn't write many songs and only gigged a few times a great time was had over those two years and I grew and grew as a player and composer, winning an award for best song and becoming the first Warrington band to play at the Northern Regional Festival at the Cockpit in Leeds. I was briefly tought by Tony Thorpe of 'The Rubettes' who had had a number one hit in the 1970's. The course was a great success and I left in 2002 with an Advanced Diploma in Popular Musics and a Nicotine addiction.
In 2003 I went to Brunel University in London to study a B.A. in Music. Sadly, within a short while of starting I realised i'd made a huge mistake with this particular course and left to find another direction. The direction was North via a Virgin Rail train from London Euston.
Over the past three or so years I have aquired new equipment and have developed into a more muture more refined guitar player. I currently live and work in Warrington, sharing a house with my girlfriend Liz and a pair of wooden elephants called 'Eddie Norman' and'Little Eric' and a furry Hippo called Humphrey (He is real!) and have a voice that is inaudible to humans. I can , however, communicate freely with baboons, gibbons and hump back whales! I'm currently working on my first album - 'In Search Of The Blue Nowhere' - Due late 2009.
