NEW PAPERMODEL CSS Albemarle out now!
To the visitors of this page:

It is with utter sadness and a heavy heart that I must inform you that the creator of the models featured on this MySpace, Magnus Mörck, passed away on January 17.
Publishing Civil War paper models remained one of the great joys of Magnus' life right until the very day he passed away, and to hear of the reception his last model, the magnificent CSS Albemarle, received was of great worth to him in a time when he was fighting the toughest battle of his life. Although he lost the battle against his brain tumour, part of his legacy will live on through this page, and I will make certain it is maintained and that the models will remain downloadable.

It was with no self interest and without the need of any public gratitude that Magnus created these models for you to enjoy, as he firmly instructed me to keep all his personal info private and off this site. I will go against his will regarding this small detail, and publish his name and a few personal details so that he can receive the credit he is due, now he have passed away beyond the humility that was characteristic in every endeavor he undertook, regarding papermodels, his academic research in the field of Ethnology or private.

The void he leaves behind is beyond any words, but I also feel extremely thankful and privileged to have had a father that has granted me such inspiration, guidance and love.
He is mourned by his life companion, partner and colleague Helene Brembeck, his daughter Tove, myself - his son Olof, grandson Johan and innumerable others.
You will forever and always remain in our hearts dad,
with love and immeasurable sorrow,

Your son

CSS Albemarle

The young Confederate Gillbert Elliott had a talent for ironclad rams. On the April 19, 1864 the small ram of 152 feet was ready to move down Roanoke river. Surprising USS Miami and the ferryboat USS Southfield, captain Flusser was killed, and the Southfield was but to the bottom. Gunboats Sassacus, Wyalusing, and Mattabesett joined the action and fired 450 heavy shots, however not much hurting the ram. Unable to defeat the Albemarle, the ram took cover in Plymouth, hiding the Union forces to avoid attack.

Monitor "Lehigh" Patrolling

Build this paper model of the ironclad Lehigh on Stono River in North Carolina, 1864, with a torpedo net, a common precaution of the time. The Passaic-class of monitors included the Lehigh and was the most numerous type to appear during the Civil War, nine ships seeing service. Improved over the first Monitor, it was larger and the turret rotated faster. With the navigation house on top of the gun turret communication became more effective. An innovation was a periscope reaching into the air to direct the artillery. Build Lehigh or any of Catskill or Patapsco, but do not forget the tug, those monitors were erratic in engine performance.

Army Transport "Maple Leaf"

This sidewheel steamer was built in 1851 for the Lake Ontario trade of freight, passengers and livestock. From 1862 it was chartered by the U.S. Army Quartermaster Department until it hit a torpedoe (as mines were called) in 1864, when part of an ill fated operation in Florida, not far from Jacksonville. The Maple Leaf sank and buried in its holds the baggage of three regiments. Rediscovered in our time, the wreck proved to be the greatest treasure of Civil War material culture, including personal belongings, tents, settlers goods and dinnerware looted on local plantations.

A year earlier, the ship caught some attention when a group of Confederate prisoners rose up against Captain Dale during a transportation from New Orleans to the north. Jumping in the ship's boats they made it to the Virginia shore and got on the train to Richmond.

Converted Lightship Tender "Coeur de Lion"

Coeur de Lion was a small ship with a big name, previously having served as a lightship tender. It was typical of many small civilian craft that performed naval duties in the blockade. A sidewheeler steamer equippied with the typical walking beam machinery, it was rebuilt to carry three guns. A line of iron plates along the gun wales added a measure of armoured protection. After the war it was returned to lightship service.

Paddle Steam Ferry "Commodore Perry"!

USS Commodore Perry was one of the many ferries and other civilian craft that were converted to serve in the Union Navy. In late 1861 it was rebuilt into a gunboat, carrying heavy cannons on the open decks. That armour plating had been added to the sides is evident from the contemporary photographs. In this model the ship appears like it did in 1864, assigned to the squadron that watched the James river. A spar torpedo points form the bow. In the Library of Congress digital collection another ferry carries the same name. Did the librarians mix them up, or were there actually two ships carrying the same name? Perhaps this one is misnamed?

Blockade Runner "TEAZER"!

The Teazer, a Confederate blockade runner, had in the beginning the only 12 pound bow gun. She encountered the USS Monitor and the USS Maratanza on the James River, on July 4, 1862. A shot from the Maratanza pierced her boiler and her crew was forced to desert her.
Fast steamboats were used to break the federal blockade of the Confederacy, bringing a sought after cargo of cotton and military supplies. This one, identified as the "Teazer" in the Libarary of Congress, was photographed having been intercepted off Wilmington.

Wilmington was one of the most frequently used ports of the Confederacy to deliver and collect lucrative goods. Cotton went one way, arms and luxuries the other. Ships were small and fast to avoid the patrolling federal navy. To a large part this vital trade was operated by British merchants and it caused no small friction between USA and Britain, the latter tending to support the Confederacy. Bermuda or Cuba was the goal of the blockade runners, if they managed to outrun pursuers. Many ships were lost in this trade, but the profits were high.

Sidewheel Steamer USS "MENDOTA"

Built by F.Z. Tucker in Brooklyn and launched in 1863, the USS Mendota patroled uneventfully as blockading ship on the James River. The rake in the bow served to remove mines that were floating or stationary.
