Check the player below from Reverb Nation for in progress cuts from producer/pianist Mo Egeston. Many of the tracks from Mo E will be making their live debut with the Urban Groov Project in 2009.
Mo Egeston's love for all grooves electronic began on the dancefloors of St. Louis' underground house scene almost 20 years ago. (You know who you are DJ Steve-O!) . Since those days his career has been a diverse journey of musical discovery and education.
After graduate school at Southern Illinois University (Edwardsville), Mo's band career began with Invincible Groov. Something about starting your first band in your mid 20s AFTER college is a little um backwards....but we digress.
Invincible Groov was a funk/groove band that enjoyed a successful residency at the Green Room, one of St. Louis, Missouri's (USA) first Washington Ave. hotspots. From Invincible Groov, Vargas Soundsystem was formed by combining some of the premier jazz players in the area to back veteran funk/rock vocalist Pete Bold.
1997 saw the Soundsystem become Vargas Swing, which quickly gained the reputation as one of the Midwest's top show bands. Vargas Swing recorded an album "FIRE" in 1998, toured the country in 1999 and appeared on two national compilations in 1999-2000. (Hipsters, Zoots and Wingtips Vol. 3/Hip- O Records and Swing Set/House of Blues) Vargas continued as one of St. Louis' most prominent bands through 2006.
From the beginnings of Vargas Swing in 1997 Mo has collaborated with singer/trumpeter and songwriter Dawn Weber. Eclipsing the national rep acquired by Vargas Swing, the pioneering live electronica act Urban Jazz Naturals (2000- 2005) has been the duo's most successful project to date. UJN released a debut EP followed by two singles in the DJ driven dance market.
These releases, How Can I (Gallery) with a remix by JT Donaldson and the Urban Jazz EP with a remix by Demarkus Lewis (Large Music), were both written by mo & dawn with mixing and beat support from UJN. (Christian Oncken aka XJN and D. Tinsley) The singles have been supported in clubs globally by some of the industry's top DJs, including legends Derrick Carter and Mark Farina, followed by glowing write-ups in magazines such as Urb and BPM magazine.
Building on the sound of UJN, the duo made the difficult decision to go "solo" in the summer of 2005 with the remix project. The sound is still all about live electronica, but with complete freedom of style and musical collaboration. The new set includes house, trip hop, electro funk, soul, acid jazz and drum& bass.
Mo has literally remixed every track that he and Dawn wrote for UJN as well as some tracks from the original Vargas Swing EP plus lots of new material. So what does it look like live? Well for starters Dawn rocks the vocals, dances and plays trumpet and flugelhorn. Never all at once but often 2 of the 3. Click to see a UJN video on You Tube.
With all of his original and lounge projects Mo's job is to mix the groove and play the keys. Using a combination of live keyboards, MIDI sequencers and the occasional sample Mo has created the new role of the "Keyboardist/DJ" Nothing else really describes the fully interactive process of mixing loops, playing solos, laying down bass lines and general sonic manipulation.

As a pianist Mo, who did his graduate work under Dr. Linda Perry and Reggie Thomas, is a respected chamber player and accompanist. He has performed with the Nuevo Tango (New Tango a la Astor Piazolla) ensemble ConcerTango that featured current and former St. Louis Symphony Orchestra players along with Webster University Faculty members. In 2000, Mo accompanied musical collaborator Dawn Weber at the Ellsworth-Smith International Trumpet Competition in Bad Sackingen, Germany.
Mo continues his chamber work with violinist and educator Twinda Murry. The two perform as the chamber group Mowinda
and collaborate twice a year on recitals given by students of their respective studios at Steinway Piano Gallery
.
As of October 2008, Mo has taken a pause from work with long time collaborator Dawn Weber (.com).

As a potential student or parent I’d like to thank you
for considering Mo Egeston Piano Studio for your study of music. My aim at the Egeston Studio is to provide
structure for the study of music without the limitations or prejudices of adhering
to a certain style.
My training has been for the most part based in the
classical tradition and I have great respect for the time tested method of
piano study. However in the modern world
there are many wonderful means of musical expression. After graduate school I found myself
exploring the worlds of jazz, electronic dance music, funk, tango and
swing. And I love them all!
So if you choose to study with me expect to learn the
basic skills of note reading, music theory and piano technique in a traditional
fashion. Once you have enough of a
foundation we can decide on a path that will take to where you want to be
musically.Although I must say that the
journey is never complete- I will simply provide my skills and energies to
assist you along the way.
Students will have the opportunity to perform on
recitals, at festivals and for their fellow students.Older students will have the choice to
perform or simply pursue the piano for pleasure.
My formal training
culminated in a degree in Chamber Music, so I am also happy to provide
accompanying/coaching as a part of or separate from the lesson. My real world training has taken me into the
world of MIDI sequencing and digital recording so some instruction
may be considered in these areas as well.
and pop students will have opportunities to record
themselves and even create demo quality CDs if that is an interest.
Ultimately, style doesn’t matter. Just be committed to learning your instrument
and I will be happy to have you. You will
find my syllabus attached. Feel free to
email or call me with any questions.
As of Fall 2008 my rates average 40/hour. Tuition will be determined on an individual
basis.

Greetings and welcome to the web home of Maurice "Mo" Egeston, pianist, producer and educator from St. Louis, MO, USA.
For the last 11 years I led the projects Urban Jazz Naturals, Vargas(Swing) and mo & dawn. All featuring the multi-talented singer, songwriter and trumpet player Dawn Weber. Currently that collaboration is paused.
Have an event? Want to get down? This is the band. Dirty Lynt- drums, vocals, programming; Hollabass-bass; guest artists to include David Lazaroff;Mo E- keys and beats and featuringthe amazing CocoSoul on vocals. Find us through Doug Hall with Talent Plus. 314. 421. 9400
Mo Egeston's Groov Lounge- The Groov Lounge is a new spin on the solo piano set. Using a blend of MIDI sequencing, samples, F/X units and live keyboards I create grooves to manipulate and improvise over. Its similar to techniques I developed for mo & dawn and continue to use as a part of UG Project. I will often feature guests including Jingo Williams on percussion and David Lazaroff on vocals and guitar.
Urban Groov Project ( UG Project) allows me to continue to genre blend with some deep live soulful house and electronica. Featuring Lamar Harris on horns, keys and vocals. www.ugproject.com.
I also play with Lamar Harris and the L . Find Lamar every Wednesday and alternate Saturdays at the Delmar Lounge doing a wide variety of groove based shows. I'm not on every show so check the calendar but don't let that stop you. Drummer Jason "Dirty Lynt" Moore (also with Soul Alliance) and Charles "Buddy" Quarells (bass/drums) are not to be missed.
I'm also excited to add Americana to my style palette with Brothers Lazaroff. The current lineup recently rocked South By Southwest (Austin) and Twangfest (Austin and STL). Great songwriting and harmony on all levels.
the Mo Egeston trio- after 12 years as the guy in charge...its time to lead from the keys (not just do the biz!!). This group will be in play by the Fall of 2009. Drums/percussion, bass and keys.
Mowinda Chamber Ensemble (Reverbnation site) is a duo featuring violinist Twinda Murry and Maurice "Mo" Egeston on piano/keyboards. Traditional violin/piano literature as well as chamber versions of standards and popular literature.
