Influences
Mostly I’m influenced by vocalists such as Diana Ross, Dolly Parton and D’Angelo, but a lot of my favorite saxophone players, who definitely influence me, are friends who I’ve been lucky enough to play with in New York -- James Chance, Tim Otto, Matana Roberts, Stuart Bogie, Martin Perna, Colin Stetson, Micah Gaugh, Avram Fefer and Cedric IM Brooks. Oh, and David Murray. I love King Curtis, Junior Walker and Eddie Harris and John Lurie & The Lounge Lizards. My favorite instrument is trombone. Living in New York influences and inspires me night and day.
This guy on the left is a huge influence -- here we are contorting ourselves at The Cooler, 2001:
Sounds Like
Enough About Me ... look at my superstellar friends!
I got the name "Moist" Paula when I formed the band Moisturizer with Moist Gina Rodriguez in 1998. Up until then I had been having fun playing sax with a lot of great bands and musicians in Australia and New York, many of whom I still play with. Since the day my friend Paul Cumming knocked on my door with a tenor sax in his hand saying "this is yours for a month and if you like it you have to give Cambo $400", I've had many exciting saxophonic adventures, particularly since as a result of what turned out to be an opportune theft I switched to bari, which I've wielded live and/or in the studio with many of my musical heroes including James Chance & The Contortions, Gogol Bordello, TV on the Radio, The Roots, Martin Luther & Cody Chesnutt, The Bogmen, Ed Kuepper and many more. Moisturizer is still my main musical squeeze and in New York I continue to play every week with Reverend Vince Anderson & The Love Choir (in our 11th year!); Burnt Sugar: The Arkestra Chamber, Greg Tate's conducted improvised orchestral organism; Derrin Maxwell & the n9s, a bluesy hip hop hybrid, as well as working on my solo saxtronic project, Secretary. Recently, as part of The Hedonistic Horns, I have recorded with The Dry Yai crew of Sierra Leone and will be doing live dates with them too.
Paula, that pic of you and James contorting kicks the llamas but, wish i could have seen that live! new tracks sound great, please send out a bulletin when that album is ready to purchase!!!!!!

Music has always been a place where anything is possible - a refuge, a magical world where anyone can go, all kinds of people can come together, and anything can happen. We are limited only by our imagination. I believe that what we do and learn inside the world of music can affect what goes on in the world in a big, positive way. music is so important - like food and water. There are so many possibilities, and many doors yet to be opened. (Bill Frisell)
