MONO JUNK - Nolla3Nolla EP, DUM-030:
One of this year's Sonar highlights for this reviewer was hearing Mono Junk's immense Basic Channel variation "Channel B" played out on a big soundsystem out in the sunshine, its instantly recognisable stabs towering over their surroundings and eliciting an instant surge of adrenalin through anyone lucky enough to stand in their wake. This limited new twelve from the Dum label groups together four rare tracks from Mono Junk's Kim Rapatti under his four different monikers - Mono Junk, New York City Survivors, Detroit Diesel and Kim Rapatti, the first of which being an utterly spannered slice of looped mayhem called "Ai Jaa", presumably titled after the wailing noise that dominates most of its 6 minute lifespan. Detroit Diesel's "Fu Dimension" on the flipside is a different beast altogether, an acid session that's uncannily simillar to a Richard D James production or remix I can't quite put my finger on right now and a track that's almost too large for words - you have been warned! The EP ends with Rappati himself detonating a frankly brilliantly bizarre electroid variation that would only probably make sense to his Finnish compatriots but which is nonetheless one of the most infectious things I've heard in a while. This guy is quite clearly a genius - 4 sides of his twisted, brilliant personality are offered here on one limited twelve - you'd do well to get on this while you can. Years before loop-based experimental techno became a stock-in-trade for scores of producers around the world, Finnish producer Kim Rapatti was recording minimal productions for more than a dozen labels worldwide. Based in Turku, he began releasing material on his own Dum Trax label in 1990, utilizing multiple aliases including Mono Junk, Detroit Diesel, Mars 31, Coopers, Unik, Melody Boy 2000, and occasionally his own name. A 1995 Dum Trax compilation was followed by his first full-length, Gloom. By the mid-'90s, Rapatti's rigid, isolationist sound became much-hyped in the techno world, and he recorded for top labels, including Plug Research, Sähkö, 12K, Neuton, Interdimensional Transmissions, Trope, and i220. - John Bush, All Music guide
