MOR KARBASI
"Dramatic Diva with a Haunting Voice and Stunning Stage Presence"
Mor Karbasi, still a tender 23 year old, burst upon London’s global music scene in March 2008 with the release of her first album “The Beauty and The Sea” – heralded by fRoots and later The Guardian – whose Robin Denselow wrote…
“This album establishes the London-based Israeli singer Mor Karbasi as one of the great
young divas of the global music scene, alongside the likes of Mariza or Yasmin Levy”
Mor Karbasi sings in Ladino, Spanish, Hebrew and on rarer occasions, English. Fortune has brought her a sublime singing voice and she puts it to most excellent use - as Ian Anderson at fRoots puts it…
“She’s able to effortlessly switch from a breathy intimacy to that hard edged, intense open throated style…pulling you deep into songs, taking the senses and emotions on an addictive roller coaster .”
With a wide-ranging repertoire from traditional songs dating from the Jewish culture of fifteenth-century Spain to enchanting compositions of her own, Mor has been seducing her fans with beautiful music. “This music should not be only enjoyed by the Sephardic Jews, it should reach each and every person” she says.
Her own writing has been considerably shaped by her interesting Sephardic lineage: descending from Moroccan and Persian Jews. As well as this musical background, she is an avid supporter of Flamenco and South American music, which adds to her already broad sphere of influences. Her mother would sing Moroccan piyyutim (liturgical poems) and Andalucian Jewish ballads at their Jerusalem home, and continues to be a major inspiration in her young daughter’s life.
This heritage already made for an inspirational Middle Eastern melting pot, when Mor met British guitarist Joe Taylor on the shore of the Sinai Red Sea. Joe is a gifted guitar player already recognised as such within his own band Blackbud, which after creating a stir among several major labels, signed a substantial deal and has since recorded two acclaimed albums. David Sinclair of the Times referred to Joe’s group as “stunningly inventive” and to Joe as “a guitarist with a quicksilver touch, an encyclopaedic knowledge of chords ….and an outstanding command of rhythmic and harmonic nuance”. His compositional input, delicate instrumental flourishes and creative direction add a modern dimension to the sound.
Not to diminish the input and importance of her other band members; she has incorporated some of the best musicians in London to form an exciting multicultural group, and reached out to musicians in Mumbai, Hamburg, Chicago and Jerusalem as guests on her recordings. The result is exotic but familiar, intriguing and unique. The best advice would be, lower the lights, or close your eyes, and let the voice take you somewhere special.

Mor. Gracias.
I've only just come across your music tonight - gorgeous. I just had to order a CD - it will make a wonderful birthday present for my wife (a good excuse to buy!)
