This acappella group from Baltimore are an all-female troupe whose performances have gained them a good deal of notoriety, largely due to the sheer flamboyance of the spectacles they create, with costumes and slapstick pie-in-the-face antics being commonplace as part of their live shows. On record Lexie Mountain Boys make for a truly bizarre listening experience. From the layered weirdness of campfire sing-along 'Where We Are' you'll hear some semblance of a recognisable song, but soon after the album dismantles itself into chaos: after the bodily squeaks and parps of 'Smack Those Lips' comes the woozy, lethargic 'Hi Yeah Vein', which is largely comprised of a choral annunciation of "Hi" and "Yeah" hypnotically, over and over again. Frankly, this is probably something of an acquired taste, and you can bet that much of the Lexie Mountain Boys experience is lost in the absence of the performance element that comes as part of the band's parcel, but fans of vocal experimentation, from Maja Ratkje to Bjork's Medulla might well find this an intriguing experience.

I once described the a capella Dadaist post-modern Americana of
openers Lexie Mountain Boys as "retarded field hollers in a pasture of
dying cattle" - and I'm afraid that this sincere compliment was
misunderstood by a few (I love challenge of disjointed folk atonalism
from the Godz to the present more than most). Lexie and gang not only
have an interesting take on music and a fun dynamic stage show, but
also deserve plenty of credit for helping Baltimore develop into one
of the country's most vibrant scenes.

Close your eyes and the collage will sprout arms and tag the pastoral

unrecognizable.

Baltimore is dangerous. If the knives don’t get to you, then there are mad bands that will wipe you off the face of the planet, for sure. The whole city is on fire. My wallet is (probably) full of blood. Below are a handful of those bands that should have an eye kept on them at all times, for forever. I’m skipping those that are already household names (e.g. Celebration, Beach House, Dan Deacon, Animal Collective, etc.), and focusing on those that are on the low low.
