I started collecting records back in 1993 as a schoolmate of mine introduced me to one of his mixtapes. He told me: “Hey man, this is break-beat!”. I was absolutely blown away by the music I perceived, so I immediately visited him and discovered the sounds of Moving Shadow, Suburban Base, Kniteforce, Lucky Spin, Impact, Metalheadz, Full Cycle, Rabbit City, Dee Jay Recordings, Strictly Underground, etc. The first "break-beat" record I heard was Hyper-On Experience’s "DEAF IN THE FAMILY EP". Through the years I grew up with the scene and I have been really addicted to that kind of music ever since. Moreover I’ve been fascinated by the technical progress that has shaped and altered the music as the years have gone by.
In 2002 I decided to quit my save job as CNC lather expert - for gods sake - in order to establish my drum & bass record-shop called “Have-A-Break”. Within 2 years the shop expanded, was honored with the “Future Music Award” for being Germany’s most popular record shop and has maintained that title so far.
Due to the fact that a lot of HAB customers also produce their own music, we decided to create a label in order to back up German producers and newcomers. For approaching this task in a professional way I studied music production, scrutinized the technical literature or trade journals and spent a lot of time at our HAB studio. To issue a guarantee for the best sound-quality I analyze every demo Song and mix it down again (if necessary) for the final mastering at Stu / Metropolis (London).
Currently I’m also working on my own long player that will be released on Have-A-Break in 2009. You will find a lot of unexpected and non-commercial works on that LP. I try to avoid using that kind of sounds I have already heard from other d&b productions to keep my music innovative and fresh. In addition, because of my roots in Breakbeat and Jungle, I want to achieve more dynamics within the music, like it used to be before the “compression madness” has taken place, which results you can hear in the clubs nowadays. Most producers place their sounds as mono as possible to get more pressure on the dancefloor. I try to bring more openness, space & dynamics to my songs to make them sound more stereophonic, so that they also appeal to home-listeners. Call it spiritual drum & bass, liquid, deep, soulful, funky, blues, experimental…I really don’t know what kind of d&b it is, I’m just doing what I like when I create the sound and composition of a track. In my opinion this is the only way to get your own style as a musician. I don’t give a damn to what others think about how to make d&b music or the norms and the trends how the music should sound…love it or leave it.
Have a listen to the tracks in the MySpace player…
