Moimir Papalescu and the Nihilists (comprised of singer La Petite Sonja, singer/guitarist Hank Mancini, electro-pioneer Papalescu, saxophonist and experimenter Peter Van Krbetz, and drummer Wratislav Placheta) have just released their highly-anticipated second album, “Lewis Neptune.“ The band first appeared on the Czech music scene in Spring 2003 with their instant hit single, “Summer Deviation.“ Its refrain, “Refresh Your Mind,“ was a much needed wake-up call to the stagnating Czech underground. Not content with a one-hit revolution, they soon released an equally innovative full-length album, “Analogue Voodoo“ (2004, X – Production / Manipulation Records), which, true to its name, managed to mix the band’s favorite pet sounds – early Suicides, Cramps-style psychobilly, and even Sinatra and Hazlewood’s dark sugarpop - into a fresh sound all their own. The album’s clean production, minimalist beats, and sexy-hip lyrics won it instant praise among Czech music fans and the Music Press alike. And in 2005 the “revolution“ was officially recognized, when, at the Czech Grammys, Papalescu and the Nihilists picked up the award for Best Album of the Year. Following the Grammys, the band caught the attention of Berlin’s Pale Music Int., one of Germany’s most progressive, electro-alternative labels, and producers of such artists as Mignon, Peaches, Kid Congo Powers, Cobra Killer, Alexander Hacke, Der Plan and many others. This past spring the label released both a 12-inch vinyl EP (featuring remixes by Sunshine, Steve Morell, Marc Lenzi, and Elektralabel), as well as a re-edition of “Analogue Voodoo“ for the German and European markets.

After the record’s initial release in 2004, the band went on tour throughout Germany and Eastern Europe, sharing the stage with the likes of Iggy and the Stooges, Mignon, Warren Suicide, Atomizer, and The Young Gods. Their shows - featuring Sonja‘s seething vocals, Hank‘s manic howls, Moimir’s fresh beats, Peter‘s sax-experiments, and Wratislaw’s wild drumming - are famous for raw punk energy and massive electric sound. And, like the performances of the punk era, this one has visual energy too: the Nihilists put on a great stage show, the audience's eyes are riveted. Marc Almond of Soft Cell fame had this to say after seeing the band at its June 2005 Berlin concert: “Fantastic! The best gig I’ve seen in the last five years...“ Ever progressive, the band refuses to be pigeon-holed, and on “Lewis Neptune“ goes back to the basics with a rockier, more garage-roots sound. Just as “Summer Deviation“ refreshed the scene in 2003, ‘Neptune‘ promises to rewrite th definition of 'alternative'. dig deeper into the underground.
