mrgrooism's Interests
General
I'm a big fan of movies new and old (but more old than new), a heavy reader, baseball (Natch! I'll watch any game, not only my beloved Yankees), PogoHockey, LeapFishing and other Spurious Sports, and lying like a rat bastard.
Well okay, I enjoy JOKING AROUND, not really lying. I'm impatient for the payoff and credit, so if I'm messing with you I'll always immediately admit it.
Music
The Beatles (together and solo), Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Warren Zevon, Akira Ifukube, Bob Dylan, BB King, Joan Jett, Traveling Wilburys, Frank Sinatra, Billy Joel, Bob Seger, Led Zeppelin, Toots & The Maytals, Weird Al Yankovich, Roy Orbison, Wilson Pickett, The Rutles, Simon &/or Garfunkel, The Big Geraniums, Squeeze, Pretenders, Meat Loaf, Max Steiner, The Fab Faux, Queen, AC/DC, Squeeze, Talking Heads, Elvises (both Presley and Costello), The Ramones, The Monkees, The Beach Boys, The Police, U2.
Geez, these are just my favorites!?
Movies
King Kong ('33 and '05 versions), Mighty Joe Young ('49 version), Godzilla (all but the '98 travesty), Frankenstein (Karloff!), The Wolfman (Chaney!), Dracula (Bela!!!), and many, many other classic monsters; Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Life of Brian, Meaning of Life, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Animal House, The Blues Brothers, Arsenic and Old Lace, Abbott and Costello movies (especially A&C Meet Frankenstein), Marx Brothers flicks, The Great Escape, M*A*S*H* (the movie), Kelly's Heroes, Time Bandits, A Hard Day's Night, The Last Waltz, Seven Samurai, Ray Harryhausen movies, Star Wars (there IS only one film with that title, no one EVER called it "A New Hope" until Episode One came along...), Raiders of the Lost Ark, Lord of the Rings (I consider it one film presented in three parts).
Television
Monty Python's Flying Circus, Fawlty Towers, MASH, All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Get Smart, F-Troop, Hogan's Heroes, Saturday Night Live (Original Recipe), Baseball (not ONLY the Yankees, I love watching any game), The Munsters, The Addams Family, Batman, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Gomer Pyle, The Monkees, Gilligan's Island, Baa Baa Black Sheep, The Odd Couple, Barney Miller, I Love Lucy/The Lucy Show/Here's Lucy, Green Acres/Petticoat Junction/Beverly Hillbillies (These shows often crossed over with characters and storylines - Green Acres even crossed over with Hogan's Heroes once in a flashback sequence!!!),
Sanford and Son.
Too many cartoons/kids shows, I'll have to make a seperate list!
Wonderama, Captain Kangaroo, Bozo The Clown, Looney Tunes (and all TV variations), The Pink Panther, Scooby Doo, Magilla Gorilla, The Great Grape Ape Hour, Super Friends (and all permutations of DC Heroes), The Banana Splits, Fat Albert, H.R. Pufnstuff, Land of the Lost, The Mighty Heroes (Diaperman! Strongman! Cuckooman! Tornadoman! Ropeman!), The Wacky Races/The Perils of Penelope Pitstop/Dastardly and Muttley (Stop That Pigeon!!!), The Flintstones, The Jetsons.
Books
My favorite all-time books are JRR Tolkein's The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings, Douglas Adams' The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy (the first 4 books of the "trilogy", hee hee) and Stephen King's The Dark Tower. Gee, they are all series!
Authors: JRR Tolkein, Douglas Adams, Stephen King, Edgar Allan Poe, Carl Hiaasin, Robert McCammon, H.P. Lovecraft, Ross Thomas, Lawrence Block, Harry Turtledove and Agatha Christie.
Comic books/characters: Sergio Aragones' Groo the Wanderer, Usagi Yojimbo, Green Lantern, Flash, Jonah Hex, Batman, Superman... most DC characters, I could go on but I'l stop there! Marvel faves include Spiderman, The Fantastic Four, The Hulk and Captain America. I've developed a love for most Marvel characters as well, but as a kid I was mainly into DC Heroes, except Spidey and The FF. I also love Jon Sable: Freelance, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (original recipe) and Grimjack.
Heroes
First and foremost, My Sister Linda, for persevering through a lifetime full of trauma and still being such a kind-hearted, generous wonder. You've triumphed over pain, anguish and tragedy enough for 12 people!
Next, My Parents and My Sister Judy, for teaching us to persevere and setting such wonderful examples and high standards.
Heroes, of course, are personified by those individual Policemen, Firefighters, Emergency Service Workers and Military Personnel of the world who have gone beyond The Job to put their lives at risk and selflessly help others.
As with the above, in every job out there we have Bad Examples who most of us notice first, as well as the regular workers who just do their jobs. Then there are the heroes, The Folks Who Care enough about Doing It Right - whatever that may be - to keep the Greater Good in step with The Bottom Line, often at personal sacrifice or the detriment of their careers.
It is these people, The Folks Who Care who are life's Real Heroes.
About me:
I'm a 44-year old caucasian heterosexual male... BAH! I'm a Larry, I'm not a demographic, hee hee! Still, we need the pedigree, huh?
Anyway, I've been an Advertising Copywriter/Copy Chief (12 years), Record Store Manager, Toy and Game Analyst, Hired Killer, Yankee Stadium Food Vendor/Ticket Taker/Usher, Public Safety Officer... wait, ok, by "Hired Killer" I mean Pest Control Technician (hey, you hire me to kill bugs, right?), and currently work as Tour Coordinator at The House That Ruth Built and weekend tour guide at the Edgar Allan Poe Cottage in Da Bronx.

Who I'd like to meet: Someone who likes to laugh or groan at my jokes, either one works, AND who'll make me laugh or groan back! Don't worry, be happy, make the best of the situation, make lemonade from life's lemons, choose your cliche here, heeeheee!
Someone who will be as supportive of me as I am of her; who won't obsess over changing me into what she wants - I'd never do that to her - but who will be happy to guide me as I try to improve myself, and of course vice versa!
Someone who likes to sing along, or sing alone, but does it out of zest for life, not trying too hard to impress anyone!
Someone who can share some of my interests, and indulge the ones she doesn't want to share (again, as with all things, it works both ways).
Someone who appreciates balance, who understands that there are more than two sides to all arguments; who can talk politics without talking hate, disagree without demonizing, because we need both doves and hawks in this world.
Someone who is tolerant of all differences in all people, who won't judge those who are different based on differences she doesn't understand, but is willing to try to understand. Intolerance is society's great blight, let's be open to all possibilities.
Hey...I just ordered a copy of The Host off of Amazon...I have no idea if it has the sub-titling or not...
oh well!
I hope you are doing good and enjoying your Easter Sunday!
OMG!! I just got back from watching The Host and you were so right about it!
Thank You ...I am so glad I didn't wait for it to be on video cuz the sound (of that thing chasing people down) was AWESOME.
I threw my hands up in front of me a couple of times...
So much fun...the closet movie I could compare it to would be Jaws (for some reason) anyhoo!!
Thanks for the recommendation!
That group sounds great and I know I will show up...
(probably not tonight tho!!)
I just saw My Name is earl and John Leguizamo was on it...
I absolutely love him. I saw him when he was doing a comedy show here but I thought that Super Mario Bros. was such a great movie...
I am determined to see The Host this weekend...I am not gonna let it pass by! It just sounds so good and something I should see in the theatre!
Have a happy Friday!
I just started Slaughterhouse Five last night...since I read Vonnegut's A Man Without a Country I wanted to re read it...The first chapter has me hooked already. I know I read it in High School but I really didn't 'get it' then.
I almost wish I could re-do those years...I was pretty darn naive.
oh well... better late than never.
I think I might want to re-read STN before Queen of Bedlam comes out.
Have you read everything of McCammon's? I have been lucky to find the out of print stuff.
YAY...glad you liked it...I think it's so different the way it starts out...I didn't know about them until I saw a VH1 movie about them. The lead singer, (wow what a voice!), lost her voice in a horrible car accident. They sang at Woodstock!
